How to rip Vocals?

Recommended Posts

I have been googling like crazy to try and figure out how to extra just the vocals from the song and I've tried Audacity and Cool Edit but neither seem to do the trick. How does everyone else rip them so perfectly!!!!

they don't. they get the accapellas as tracks with nothing but the vocals. although another way you can do it is to do the phase inversion trick if you have an identical instrumental version of the song. what you do is drop the full song in on one track, drop the instrumental in on the second track, make sure that they are lined up perfectly, and invert the phase on one of them. what this will do is cancel out everything identical and leave only the things that are different between the two. if you have lined it all up perfectly, the only thing different should be the vocals, and then they will be the only thing left. This doesn't always work perfectly though because of mixing/mastering differences between the instrumental and the vocal versions.

then you probably weren't lined up perfectly.

you will never get a perfect isolation, but most times if you do it correctly with the right audio files you can get something pretty unnoticeable in the final remix.

zoom in uber microscope hardcore and make them peaks and valleys match up

btw I tried this in Cubase with one of my own songs for shits and giggles to try it out and couldn't get it to work at all but I think it was because I couldn't find the right inverse/invert processing in cubase

You need to split the the stereo tracks then invert one and make them each mono.

you totally can though, almost 100% isolation. almost.

and unless for some reason the instrumental and the vocal version are panned differently you shouldn't have to go to 2 mono tracks, stereo should work fine. in cubase you can just use the phase button on the mixer i think.

actually this might be a good topic for my next video tutorial. maybe i'll do one up tonight.

Yeah I do the phase inversion technique, it works.

You gotta be able to hit "move left/right" with your keyboard tho to line it up perfectly, but you know exactly the moment it happens.
