i've been looking around for some decent studio monitors, and came across these.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Rec...00666&src=HC004

for some reason, these seem way better than anything else in the price range, and have gotten pretty much all positive reviews.

i've really got no idea when it comes to this stuff, as i'm just starting out, but i'm pretty sure anything will be better than my 2 watt speakers from wal mart at this point. was just wondering if this is an extremely good deal, or if there's something i'm missing.

recommendations and stuff would be appreciated within the price range, $200-250.

surprisingly, for the price, these look pretty good.

normally i'd suggest going passive with good power amp, but these look teh shit for entry level production.

ad with actives, you gots the advantage whereby the amp/crossover is actually designed to work with the drivers.

these look good.

with passives i'd need an amp right? =\ don't know much about that stuff either.

Yea, you'll need an amp. I believe that Alesis makes their own amps but they're expensive, but if you can find a 200W amp for under $ 100, which isn't hard to do, then you'll have yourself a nice set up.

pair is 250 it looks like

awesome deal if you asked me

on a side note i just got myself a 2.1 system called "blue sky media desk" designed for desktop musicians and i recommend them so much, but that would be roughly in the 500 dollar range unless you got them at price

i've got a question too.

KRK V4 II, apparently really good for the size (9 1/2" tall), the size apparently makes it better for small rooms (as well as not taking up as much space), because with larger models, the bass can get get too loud (which can be tweaked on the r8 but not the r6).

anyway, is euro 339,- a good price (per speaker)? seems a bit pricey for the size.

Those Fostex look excellent for the price. Also, Fostex have been designing their own drive units for decades (including the FW800N, a 32" woofer) and they are generally very well respected from what I've read.

the behringer 2031s are really tweakable if the bass is out of control, or the room is small/large...

ha. behringer once again rips off mackie. look at the back of that truth monitor... it's like they jacked a truck full of HR824/624 parts. =) don't know if you guys remember the scandal back in the day when the behringer MX9000 mixer was the center of a lawsuit because it was an EXACT copy of the mackie 32X8.

that said, behringer makes cheap gear, to be sure. and copying a decent manufacturer doesn't hurt.

for those of you looking at mackie HR824s, i'd encourage you to also check out the Dynaudio Acoustics BN-5As (and the smaller version which just came out.)

and if money is no object, look at ADAM monitors. enhanced ribbon tweeters - incredible range and clarity. i've heard a few different types of the ADAMs and they are REALLY phenomenal. just not cheap. although their base model is about on par with the mackie 824s in cost.

cheers,

c

i use alesis monitor ones in combination with an alesis amp and philips CS-979's in combination with an old shitty technics amp (fucking loud speakers tho, with a 16" bass driver: the alesis speakers got a 6,5" bass driver, go figure). the alesis monitors are pretty decent for the price, but they are only 120W and they dont deliver the lowest of the lowest basses. i really like them for mixing/'mastering' tracks though, if you are considering alesis monitors you should drop by, i'll let you hear some sound thru them :))

Hm..now I don't have much experience with studio monitors but if you are trying to monitor exlectronic/digital music that includes very low bass frequencies you may want a monitoring system like maudio lx4 2.1 expandable studio monitors Note; this 2.1 monitoring system is expandable to a 5.1 monitoring system so when the day comes when you want to created wicked surround sound techno, it will be easy to afford.

For those of reading this thread that can't afford monitors and create primarly digital music..relax...I monitor by switching between an old set of altec lansing 221's and a RCA 2.1 shelftop system If you can make your mixes sound great between two different 2.1 systems and your car speakers (without having heavy bass frequencies rumbles the car cabin's speaker system) you will have the results you want.

Remember Select Ambient Works 85-92 is one of the definitive ambient techno albums but lets face it, the mix very well could have been made through a set of old speakers or maybe even headphones. The bass frequencies in that album are obnoxiously loud.

i feel like an idiot. i just got my audiophile 2496 in, and i don't have any RCA powered speakers? i dunno. the speakers i've got are just those little tipped cables that come with most computers. am i going to have to wait until i get some monitors, (are all monitors RCA?), or is there a convertor for now, or what? ahh.
