this is amazing! i hadn't heard of this before. Was this a public access show? from Detroit? The music and the fashion mix together in such an odd way. It's like a time machine popped up in the early 80s and played music from the future to the disco crowd.

i need a dvd of this stuff.

Yep... Exactly... This was a Detroit public access show that played a lot of local underground techno as well as commercial dance stuff...

The Scene makes the Hit Man and Her look like the Mickey Mouse Club... Haaha

I wonder if you could catch up to these people today and say...

"remember when you broke out your Gucci, crimped your hair, got your fade touched up and went and danced at The Scene? Did you know that some of the most innovative musicians in the world and millions and millions of people across Europe and the world would point to that same music as their primary influence/reason for producing and raving until dawn?"

If they didn't follow the trajectory through the late 80s and into the 90s-beyond, I don't know if they could appreciate the gravity of it or not. Showing them Autechre? I can hear Detroit in Autechre but that would be like asking a non-chin stroker to find a smashed picture inside a swarm of insects.

Kind of like that old "fantasy" situation of showing George C. Coleman (drummer for The Winstons R.I.P.) just how many ways the 7 second break he played back in 1969 have been used. I think those "old guard" people just got pissed about it...I seem to remember James Brown really hating the sampling craze because no one was getting royalties.

If you think about it for any length of time, music is so extremely strange. Think about Phil Spector, techno, how the UK worshipped the US for a chunk of time and then the US flipped it back and lionized the UK and then back again, billion dollar record labels and empire record stores rendered obsolete by downloading the binary for the song instead...just strange.

Send a message to YouTube user Caprice87 with your thoughts and let us know how it goes. Judging by his/her comments it would appear that they were actually on the show at some point.
