Stephen Colbert Opening Statement

This is fail. He should have just done it out of character.

Fail how? I think its pretty good and he is like Semi in Character semi not. Maybe not even at all.

People are laughing you just can't hear it cause they focused in on his voice. At the end when they cut the focus you can hear everyone laughing. This is pure gold.

Because it's something he's passionate about and he's intelligent and could have made more of an impact if he had just said how he feels instead of adding a comedic twist to it.

Maybe... Thats how he does it though, by being sarcastic and making fun of their ideas in front of them. Pretending to a agree to their absurd ideas while letting them know how absurd their ideas just are.

This Video also has the part where they asked him to leave edited out. The guy later apologizes for asking him to leave.

Agreed, but they toned them down so you could hear him speak. I didn't need to hear them laugh, the laughter from my family and I filled that void up.

Yeah, I watched the entire thing yesterday... I'm sticking to my original assessment.

His technique is genius

why wouldn't he play his character? his character is the only reason he got there. it helped bring attention to the issue. i actually heard a racist glenn beck watching acquaintance bring this up in conversation last night, i'd say that's a win.

i don't see the fail. sure he could have said more. but if he weren't in character he would still have missed something or other. why is it a fail?

colbert very rarely speaks out of character. sarcasm and reductio ad absurdum are his schtick, and I would argue that to make public statements out of character which plainly state his actual beliefs would negatively effect the power and efficiency of his character

that said, I agree that this speech was a bit weak

I remember seeing his show a couple months ago where he said he would volunteer to pick beans. I'm very happy he's taken it a few steps farther. Colbert is brilliant.

i don't see anything wrong with it. And i find it hilarious that people took offense to it since he treated it as a joke (since congress is supposed to be serious) . 99% of congress appears in character anyways, nothing wrong with Colbert doing it too
