headphones

i know, there's a million topics on this already. i need a specific recommendation though.

i want headphones for use with an mp3 player, not earbuds, preferably closed not open because i'll be using them in public. collapsible would be nice. i've looked at sennheiser px100 and some grado models. is there anything else out there? i was using shure earbuds, which had outstanding audio quality, but messed up my inner ear, and the cord would wear out after a couple months of use.

the cable is coiled so it can be short if you want to walk around with it and easy to just wrap up in your pocket .. the sound is great, ive looked up tons of reviews and they say they are better than the sennheisers recommended above and the shures, the headphones are closed and not too big, they are very comfortable and dont squish your head (like the ones recommended above, ive read tons of reviews for all the headphones around 100 dollar range and these are the best)

so yea i would say just go ahead and look up what people say about this stuff. i have tried the 100 dollar closed shure headphones.. forget what theyre called but they have screechy highs, but are pretty decent. havent tried to sennheisers but like i said apparently they squish your head.

are those sennheisers even remotely portable? i already have some beyerdynamic dt880s that probably sound a million times better than any sennheisers but they're gigantic and need a headphone amp to drive them.

hmmm, seems like closed cans are always going to be huge and non portable. i just can't do earbuds/in ear phones anymore, they really fucked up my ear canal after years of wearing them.

nah man the mdrs are quite portable. they arent too big at all. if you want high quality studio stuff thats portable you definitely want a pair with the coiled cord, otherwise you will have to wrap it up with a twist tie which is annoying.. the mdrs have coiled and they fit around your neck pretty well and also fold up and can go in the bag..

if the intention is portable use i would go with the smaller mdrs

ive never owned a pari of these so I cant personally attest though sony makes the best consumer quality headphones with the longest lifespan imo. dont know if these are fold up though i thought sony made a pair like this that were though.

i have mdr 7509 HD which are phenomenal for the studio but i dont take them out and about.

how did you find out you were getting ear canal damage? ive always used ear buds but i value my hearing more than compact headphones and maybe should switch

i recently went to the doctor because i having some hearing problems and some tinnitus and found out that i basically had blocked up my left ear canal with the various shure sound isolating headhones that i've been wearing every day for the last couple years. it's odd because they're all rated pretty highly for safety, and the sound quality is second to none. but...i have some weird issues in my ear canal now, lots of fluid build up and nastiness. might not be a problem everyone encounters though. a big part of it was probably me pushing the phones too deep into my ear. i do know someone who ruptured an ear drum doing that. and you can infections from build up of earwax all over the phones themselves, even if you keep them clean. it just isn't a good idea to have them in your ears for extended periods.

for djing...honestly im not such a big fan of those...they get really uncomfortable but they are the best for djing because they are loud and clear with a good low freq response so you can hear the beat

They're good for everything, so i use them for everything. But then again, I'm also just really used to how they sound and feel, so anything else I try doesn't sound or feel right. If I started off with a different high end set of headphones I would likely adjust to and swear by them ever after. I have super high end studio monitors that cost ten times more, but for me to know when a mix is done I rely on the 700s. It's just how I'm used to hearing music.

These panasonic headphones are my travel pair, surprisingly great sound and sound isolation. They block out most outside noise so they're good for the bus or outdoors. I think the design is nice, 80's feel, with good build quality. But they will look a bit 'big' if you have a small head. They're a great price considering the quality, I highly recommend them
