This is where you start right here...

If you don't totally bliss out to that track /album, you're not gonna like Arthur Russell.

Asperger's warning - if you are one of those weird OCD kids who are totally literal about shit and get hung up on irrelevant shit, you might not like the fact that a lot of his recordings are posthumous releases of demos and therefore are NOT TECHNICALLY PERFECT

I own all his albums and I'm a big fan. There are four albums worth getting imo, but they're all very different from each other. Here's a short description of them:

World of Echo (1986). His best, but also his most difficult. This is a solo album, featuring almost only his cello, vocals and weird sound effects. Every convention of "pop music" is out the window. I wouldn't start here, as it may be too.. out there.

Another Thought (1994). A compilation of tracks made after his death. It's far more conventional sounding than World of Echo, yet it has Russell's utterly unique take on pop and disco. I'd start here, because this album contains styles covered in all his other albums.

Calling Out of Context (2004). This is also a compilation and the sound is somewhat similar to Another Thought. However, this release has more of disco/dance sound, relying more on old school drum machines. So if you like Another Thought, pick up this one too.

Love Is Overtaking Me (2008). Another compilation and without a doubt the most conventional sounding release under his name. Most of the tracks are with a backing band, and the songs are basically his take on pop/rock. This is the opposite of World of Echo. Still a fine release though.

You might want to take a "chill pill" before you "bliss out" to this one

I love this track! It was also released on the compilation The World of Arthur Russell in 2003.

No it wasn't. It's on Calling out of Context. I was thinking about Walter Gibbons' remix of Let's Go Swimming which is on The World of Arthur Russell.

actually, the best place to start with arthur russell is the film Wild Combination -- which is a very good doc on his life and music, will bring a tear to your eye and blessing to your ears.

Thanks! I love this way of discovering artists I don't know yet.

30 Century Man got me into Scott Walker by surprise, so will check this out!

love this song. can't help but feel if it was more polished, it could have been a massive hit. maybe it would lose what i like about it if it was polished though

Arthur Russell?

Only rule is listen to & absorb every single composition he ever made.

A true innovator, from deep disco to abstract instrumentals, did similar things for strings compared to Jon Hassell & wind instruments.

500 years from now he'll still be relevant.
