remy marathe
i just switched my old pc from windows xp to ubuntu 10.4. so far i'm really liking it but i'm wondering if there's anything in particular that would ease the experience along. i'm new to linux and so i'm not really familiar with the terminal and command lines and shit like that, but i wouldn't mind learning. eventually i'd like to move on to a more advanced distro, but i figured ubuntu was a good starting point. also, is rhythmbox the only decent music player? it's really not very good... Guest Adjective
i'm learning with ubuntu (xubuntu) as well, ubuntu forums or even forums for other distros, and google seem to have all i need. maybe try exaile for a music player. google for a unix command line tutorial, i'm sure there's a few. it's worth taking a little time to learn as it can make some things a bit easier, and makes you look cool. Ego Posted October 6, 2010 Report Share Edit Hide Delete Posted October 6, 2010 (edited) Some software I'd recommend: Music: mpd + ncmpcpp = killer. The only thing that can get close to my foobar experience. I hate Exaile, Amarok and Rhythmbox. Video: smplayer (nice GUI voor mplayer, which is much much better than VLC) Torrent client: rtorrent (+ rutorrent) Lightweight browsing: Midori Learning the command line is not that hard and a lot of command line software is very flexible. Just look at some command line cheatsheet and start exploring.
