Ear fatigue etc

Recommended Posts

Thought we should start up a topic on Ear Fatigue and temporary hearing troubles.

I found a good article which explains a lot about it and the most common thing we music makers will suffer from is called "threshold shifting". This is where the lower frequencies become no longer as audible as they were so in otherwords higher frequencies become more pronounced. Currently I am suffering from a bit of "threshold shifting" so am gonna try and give me ears a wee rest volume wise.

Also the article mentions the idea of dynamic eqing as volume gets louder to compensate for certain frequencies becoming perceptually louder (the higher ones obviously). I think this is an interesting concept although probably not something that should really be explored as people will just keep cranking the volume up on their stereos/ipods without realising the damage they could be potentially doing to their ears.

Another idea that I think would be good would be for someone to invent dynamic decibel timing software that basically overrides a user's volume control in order to stop short to long term ear damage. In short it would work out roughly how loud and how long a listener has been listening to his/her stereo/ipod and then simply turn it down to an appropriate level. Alternatively it could pop up with a warning in order for the user to turn it down to an appropriate listening level. I'm suprised this hasn't been researched as I think it would be a great idea.

Anyways have of a read of the article I think its a very important read!

Yeah thanks a lot man.

What I don't get is ever since I got this really bad cold in Chicago (took some antibiotics at the time to get better) I have gotten this ringing in my ear. I can ignore it in normal circumstances but when I go to sleep or focus on it I can hear it. Its like the intro to Ventolin constantly playing. Its been 3 years now and I still have it but I think its been roughly the same.

Mm sounds like Tinnitus or possible some frequency compensation maybe?

You know I'm just really suprised at how much our hearing quality is ignored in general. I mean when we go for a check up at the Doctors for instance it should be part of it. I don't know if there are ear specialists out there but hearing is so important and everyone should have an education on how to keep their ears in tip top condition.

Hmmm, sounds scary. I guess thats what I have. I'm just glad I can hear, I hope I never lose my hearing but if I do become hard of hearing I'm gonna blast Aphex Twin up in my 80s lol.

Dude seriously I'd go see a specialist and/or do some heavy research on the internet to find out what your exact problem might be and what possible solutions there might be. Nevertheless superficially it does appear to be Tinnutus as my mother has the same symptom you mentioned.

I remember my hearing being tested as a kid in Elementary school, but not since. I just wonder how long it will be before we notice a rise in hearing loss due to the millions of teens blasting their ipods in their heads so many hours a day.

Absolutely. Governments need to get way more active on this perhaps even get some scarey ads on the tv/net about what can happem if you lose your hearing and how it can impact on your quality of life.
