What recent albums (let's say from 2005 onwards) do you think will go on to become classics?

by "classics" I mean albums that will stand above the rest and have cult followings years after their release.

I am curious because its hard to compare a modern album to the giants of old, but great albums started out like any other and it seems their true legacy is recognised in retrospect.

Hard to say, but I guess that the release need to be hyped in some way, that the music is good and that it will be regarded as "the sound of that time".

Candidates that may be future classics (although I do not appreciate all of them):

LCD Soundsystem : s/t

The National : Boxer

Sufjan Stevens : Illinois

Joanna Newsom : Ys

Animal Collective: Merriweather Post Pavilion

Burial: Untrue

Perhaps some harmony-indie-album with the Grizzly Bear/Fleet Foxes-sound as well.

what? no way! I'd almost say the opposite.

hyped stuff can be a disappointment, and will have an immediate audience rather than a cult one.

also, rather than "the sound of that time" I'd say stuff that came out of nowhere and defined a whole heap of stuff after it would more be reguarded as classics.

The only album I can think of that I think wil be considered a classic (and its already been mentioned) is

The-Knife-%E2%80%93-Silent-Shout-2006.jpg

It's one of the few album that I don't hesitate to call a masterpeice, and its already influencing a new wave.

Well, I may have put it wrong, but when I say hype and good music, I mean that I think that there have to be kind of a well-deserved hype. I think there is a difference between cult albums and classic albums. Not that the albums have to reach the top of the chart or something, but at least I think it have to hit the "masses" of people who are genuinely interested in music, like through a Pitchfork hype or something. "Silent Shout" is a good example, and a candidate I was considering myself; the album is very good, I think it has a kind of "contemporary sound" but still will not sound old in ten years, and has had some kind of hype the "right places" (8.6 on pitchfork and good reviews from credible reviewers). And I don't think that hyped stuff only will have an immediate audience. If you check the charts over at Rateyourmusic, the highest rated albums are all classics; albums from The Beatles, Miles Davis, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, etc. Those were all albums/artists that generated a certain hype back in the days I think.
