Guest tht tne
i don't want to spoil the party but where have the days gone where someone would recommend a band and you would have to actually seek up their music? being inundated with youtube embeds in music discussion threads on watmm takes a lot of the fun out of discovering music, is basically all that i'm saying i dunno, what do y'all think? imo each exposure to a youtube of an artist or band is one less time i'll be able to enjoy that particular track in the future 'cause i get burnt out so easily when everything is out there for all to see... as the great and knowledgeable 2pac once said, "i don't want it if it's that easy," my nigs Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/60427-youtube-discovery-threads/ Share on other sites

Guest thepilot
It's a trade-off though right? I mean for every missed opportunity of self-discovery there are x amount of artists/compositions made available to you that you would have never been exposed to otherwise. I do understand the dilemma though. If our senses are overloaded now, where will be in ten years? Maybe inventing new senses. Guest futuregirlfriend
I've posted in some of them, so obviously I have no problem with them. Getting less enjoyment out of music that's suggested to you rather than something you just stumbled over yourself is one of those weird music nerd phenomena like taking a dislike to things that x amount of other people have already said they like. Awepittance mentioned Hyu's "Random Walker's Delight" a few years ago and it's become one of my favourite albums. You're lucky I can't find anything on YouTube because I would embed here. I don't see how I could seriously like it more if I'd just come across it on soulseek and downloaded it "Hmm, interesting folder name" or less if he'd accompanied his text with an embedded video. I think that adding the video may encourage someone to give whatever taste you're peddling a chance. There's also the thing, I can understand if someone never listened to my advice again after one shit suggestion, like after the italo or old gold thread I could mention Gene Clark's "White Light" (Example. I'm listening to it now) somewhere else and people who weren't into that thread, or what I pasted in, probably wouldn't give my suggestion a second thought. If I remove a barrier and give easy access to a sample, who knows. Personally I'm quite appreciative of any suggestions in any form and wish more people would post things with unabashed enthusiasm. There are lots of knowledgeable people here and it's a shame we don't hear a peep out of some of them. I like browsing the Aphex live threads and being informed by people like noise of various 20 year old 12"s I never knew about. The old gold thread could of gone anywhere really. I joined this forum to hoover up names I hadn't heard before. delet...
On 10/11/2010 at 4:27 AM, eugene said: no. pretty much, stupid point. I have found so much music through casual youtube list browsing. It is single-handedly reigniting interesting in 10's of thousands of nigh-on-dead bands from many of the ages of music. So yeah, think again. and yes, i have bought some of this music, well those things that are still in print, that i want more than a passing listen to. also you talk of over-kill, find a style that you love. Can't get too much of the funk. Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide all signatures A member of the non sequitairiate. Zephyr_Nova
10 years ago I didn't have enough music to love, now I've got so much of it that I don't have the time to listen to it all save once or twice a year, unless I were to devote all my time to listening to music. So yeah, I get the oversaturation dilemma, but as far as dilemmas go it's a pretty good one to have. It's a desirable dilemma. I just wish there were twice as many hours in a day. Guest Greg Reason
I think it's handy in that people are quite lazy by nature and sometimes they would miss out on something really good because they wouldn't go seek it out themselves even when reading about it. I know I would definitely not listen to as much new shit if it wasn't for the embedding. You read about it then bam you can hear it. Makes one lazy yes but maybe the benefits are equal... And I still do seek a lot of stuff out myself so it needn't entirely replace that way of getting into fresh stuff Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/60427-youtube-discovery-threads/#findComment-1434873 Share on other sites
