major dilemma

so I went ahead and purchased two works of art from a friend I went to Uni with, without really measuring anything... He teaches at the uni these days and is generally selling artwork for lots of money.

The one painting is fine. it's 4X4 feet and fits really well in my office. you'll note that the circle disappears when you stare at the middle of the painting. From a distance it seems to glow. full-on wicked.

The second painting however has fucked me in the ass. I paid 250$ to ship it from Toronto because it's 7X7 feet. We couldnt fit it through the front door (which I half expected) so I told the dude to leave it with me and I would cut the door jambs off and it would fit. Well the fucking door jambs are not coming off and a family friend said they're not going to because of the age of the door frame. So, the only other option is RIPPING out the entire Door frame and adjoining two side glass panels, bringing in the painting and then installing a new, but bigger door so that we can eventually get the painting out of the house if we decide to move ever.

The new bigger door and 1 side panel (taking up same room as old 3-part frame) is going to cost approximately $2000.

If I return the painting back to toronto it will cost me another $250. So basically I'm out a wicked painting and $500 for shipping it both ways. If I keep it I'm getting a painting worth upwards of 5 grand but have to spend $2000 to keep it.

My painter friend would likely take it back but I really love it and he basically gave it to me for $500, despite being in a gallery with a $5000 tag and was the showpiece for his master's thesis.

WTF do I do? I really love this painting but it sounds crazy to me to keep it.

I'm an idiot I know. here are the paintings in case you're interested.

It's on canvas right ?? just have it unpinned, rolled up. then framed back inside your house. That would be marginally cheaper than ripping the door frame out of your lovely house.

cut it in slices of random angle, recreate painting leaving 1 inch gap (250$ for somebody shooting yellow paint out of the paste? LOL)

Deconstruct the fuck out of it. Make an IDM out of it.

it's on wood unfortunately. i fucking wish it was on canvas.

as for cutting it I think that might reduce the value and awesomeness of this work. at 7 feet by 7 feet it's like a wall of the beginning of the universe. you can't cut that up.

Money is a piece of shit for the most part. In this particular case I'm only giving slight consideration to ripping the door out because the painting is majorly awesome and was given to me for 1/10 of the actual price and will be worth tons of money one day.

the first thing my wife said was "we're not moving franklin, so don't even joke about it."

You could get 49 1'x1' paintings out of it. Would look pretty awesome framed and in a grid.

Sell the painting for 5K and use the money for a nice ornamental door frame which would have allowed the "artwork" inside.

Then cry for a few days over what a mistake you've made.

the width of the blade cutting it would destroy some of the work though right. also, who knows how easy it is to cut through paint.

Why don't you ask your friends at the café while drinking fair trade coffee in front of your Macbook?

because i spent $500 on a painting valued at over $5000? right. i drink water, use android, and never sit down in public unless it's at a restaurant.

ya that's where it is now. I doubt our canadian winters are good for both the paint and the wood it's on.

This is what makes lots of money.

A blue ring left over from a cup and some random stretched ovals among a plain space backdrop(edit: make that a kids crayon drawing)

I need to rethink my career path.

the blue ring was made after he crafted an autocad machine to create a perfect circle with a spray can and then jimmyed it so it would then make an inner and outer ring of really diffuse paint. the diffused edges allow the painting to disappear when it appears in your peripheral vision. when you stare at the center of the painting long enough (usually 5-10 seconds) the entire canvas will appear to be grey. we have shittons of cones in our central vision and shittons of rods in our peripheral vision. The rods have trouble "seeing" things with diffuse edges. it's really awesome and it's huge so it takes up half of a wall.

The big bang is not some random stretched ovals on a plain space backdrop. measure out 7 feet by 7 feet and try to understand how big the thing is. he used a pendulum suspended from the ceiling with a controller to release paint from the end. the detail is incredible--which you can't tell from the picture.

anyway it's not a wicked career path. he just sold about 15 grand worth of a painting to a large corporation here and after paying 50% (standard) to the gallery it was in he's left with 7.5. it's not like he's selling 10 massive paintings a year. the guy probably makes 30 grand or something.

if you think you can do it essines, i suggest you try. open up a big bottle of vodka and start painting.

Have the artist cut it in pieces, then it's OK and should not devalue it.

the artist refuses to alter it in any way unfortunately
