i mean, there's lots of people who write acid techno, but it's usually inspired by the more underground scene.

what about like breakbeat (chemicalbrothers) , polished dnb (ltj bukem)

basically popular dance. no headphuck stuff that most of us are influenced by.

is it hard to write stuff like that ^^^ i imagine so

I've actually never tried writing the super fast IDM drum stuff, but a lot of my songs do bury the drums in the mix or don't follow a single steady beat.

What are we calling popular dance here? The boom tish boom tish stuff? Because I do use that as an element a lot, but never as a main focus.

Absolutely. I always aim to make shit that's got a wide appeal. I'm doing lots of remixes at the mo just for experience. That said I'd find it hard to make something that just sounded like chart cheese tho. Here's a remix I did a few weeks back ... I guess you could say it has a broader appeal.

went to some big cheezy dance event recently for shitz n giggles and the DJ's were doing fuck all with the most predictable safe 4/4 fodder yet all the gurners were loving it. There were at least a couple of thousand punters and whoever was putting this on was raking in a lot of dosh and i kept thinking to myself that i'm in the wrong business, this shit is childsplay

i go to an underground event and there is never ever a safe number of ppl which can be good or bad

After months of going to bars/clubs with a buddy of mine and trying hard to figure out what exactly is the winning formula to rocking a dance floor I discovered the following. I have no idea why I'm sharing this, this is so simple and also so top secret.

I do. House, breaks, and downtempo type stuff. Occasionally something jungley.

I'm pretty stuck in the late '90s I think.

i think my most recent pselodux ep (see my sig) is fairly accessible/dancey/whatever. kinda what i want psytrance to sound like.

ya I think proper dance music is not easy at all really. There are pretty strict guidelines to follow + the production must be flawless. I actually have big respect for dance producers. I actually like a lot of dance music too. I think that it is music that is meant to perform a very specific task and does so very well. Of course I don't like a lot of SUPER mainstream shit, but there is really loads of great dance stuff still being put out that is very good. It's meant to be music about the body. It's simplicity in form and predictability are what give it it's transcendent possibility. I might get very into an Aphex track, but it's completely not the same as dancing in a big dark room to a 4 hour Steve Lawler set.
