Armistace day protests

Recommended Posts

I would like to get other peoples opinions on what happened earlier today around 11am. I work with what seems to be out and out racists so wouldn't mind a more level headed view on what the Muslims have been up to today.

  Quote
They gathered near Hyde Park in London before burning a model of a poppy on the stroke of 11am then marching along Exhibition Road and along an underpass, past the Victoria and Albert and Natural History Museums.

Asad Ullah, 23, a spokesman for the group who would only say he was from London, said: "The British soldiers you remember on this day are soldiers who have taken innocent lives in illegal occupations and unjust wars.

"Our aim is not violence but if people come to us with violence, Muslims will defend themselves."

He added: "We will do this again. Until the British people condemn the British Government for these illegal wars, we will not stop protesting."

Posters bore slogans including "Hands off Muslim lands" and "Islam will dominate", and flags bore Arabic writing with the words "There is no God but Allah".

And, in other news, radical Muslims whine and bitch like every other religion that thinks they're the only "true" path to God.

I think the main point is that they are aiming to incite some kind of hateful reaction to their "protest" and then play the victim.

Dont get me started :trashbear:

At least it's still called Armistice Day in Europe. Over here in America we changed the name to Veteran's Day. Now, instead of commemorating the end of war (ha), we commemorate the people who make war possible.

I can't think of a more ridiculous perversion and or blatant instance of doublespeak other than the time the Department of War changed it's name to the Department of Defense in the 1940s.

Couldn't disagree more; veterans do deserve any recognition they get; especially in lieu of proper medical/psychiatric care. The people who make war possible have other holidays (Presidents' Day, for example).

A few of Muslims burnt a poppy, wheres the news? Racists love this shit.If one Muslim hates the west then they all must in their weird logic. This logic wasnt really projected on to all the Catholics after last weeks Celtic match, but then they were white and working class.

But we are perusing illegal wars that are slaughtering countless innocent victims, and what better day to get media attention for this than on 11/11. Perhaps they should have been a bit nicer to the poppies though, after all how are the taliban gonna afford weapons if not through the sale of opium. It should be a symbol of their resistance to occupation^. heh.

(^ - then again the taliban did actually manage to stop the cultivation of opium poppies in the lands that they controlled whilst they were in power, so perhaps it's not their people that are growing the stuff today, given the strong moral stand they had against it at the time. But it made a marginally fun end point to my post so fuck it.)

Shame about this.

I don't mean shame about the poppy burners, you get misguided attention seekers everywhere. Shame about the papers so willingly giving them attention and giving them the time to say "We'll do this every year DERRRRRR" and publishing it.

The thing is; there was like 30 of them. That's fucking nothing. If nobody was making a big deal out of it, no one else would care and they would eventually give up out of boredom. No point getting all riled up about it. I see it the same way as I see a kid crying about having their toys taken away, just ignore them and they'll eventually stop crying and go to bed.

It's odd to imagine the arab nations celebrating armistice day anyway, considering how they got kinda fucked over at the end of wwi when the allies backed out on the land treaties they had made with them for their assistance in fighting the germans and the ottomans

These actions are not "freedom of speech" though.

Regardless of your background / religious views / ethnicity / whatever, this is just damn disrespectful, nay, evil.

unfortunately, those actions are exactly freedom of speech.

two things wrong with that video:

1. the person who uploaded it continually refers to the instigators as 'muslims', rather than what they should really be called: extremists.

2. the other pop-up comments on the video continually show a biased view, with comments such as "look at what these muslims do for the country that provides them with blah blah blah". this video, rather than showing an unbiased piece of footage, comes across as having a particular manifesto, which is to instil similarly unintelligent hatred towards 'muslims'.

some people need to show some understanding. on both sides.

heh never heard of it. it's somewhere in our Americky contract but I think it must be in 1776 English and thus unintelligible or something.

Religious fanaticism aside it's a perfectly valid and viable protest. I come from a background where the British troops are feared and despised, I've never worn a poppy and never will. I don't feel any animosity towards British people, in fact nowadays most of my close friends are Brits. I would feel extremely affronted, though, if i was expected to condone the actions of the army and mourn the loss of the stupid, murderous thugs in it.

To be honest, I take Veterans Day with a grain of salt. It feels way too blindly patriotic for me to take it seriously. I do, however, always have a great deal respect for guys that join up or have served prior, despite my personal views on our foreign policy.

And Jim, not every soldier - Brit or otherwise - is a stupid, murderous thug, only some are.

What the Muslims are "protesting" about is the war in their home land. They aren't complaining about what is going on in this country so, even it it was possible, kicking them out is a completely different story. If they were going on about the tax they have to pay, the conditions they have to live in etc then ok then you have a point. But why is there a vast amount of people joining groups online, copying status updates etc. spouting these derogatory comments all over the place like "get out if you don't like them apples" etc which mean nothing about what they are protesting.
