Guest Jimbob
Right i've basically been meaning to get a new computer for nearly a year now, and this four year old HP is kinda slowing me down a bit. I run Ableton 7 (soon to be 8) and am gonna be spunking a load of money on a new machine. I'm about to come into a bit of money so i'm prepared to spend a bit, but the main thing that puts me off going for a Mac is the whole VST/AU thing. I've done a little bit of research and come across FXpansion, but it doesn't look to conclusive, and i'm really looking for some advice from those of you who i'm sure have made the transition. Will I be able to salvage my glorious collection of plugins? I've no plans to get into Logic anytime soon either btw Cheers WATMM Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/61472-new-laptop-time/ Share on other sites
chassis
You should definitely get a Mac. That is, if you dont mind having your heterosexuality questioned. Dan C
I changed to mac but I don't use plugins, so I'd imagine if you want to keep them you should think twice before stepping up to greatness. MAXIMUS MISCHIEF
macs are a ripoff. i like the os a lot more than windows but its just not worth the money for an underpowered computer. youre basically just paying for the look of the machine, the brand name and the os. the insides of a 2000 dollar mac are less powerful than a pc you could get / make for less than a grand. Guest Backson
I heard that Macs are slower and more susceptible to viruses. Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/61472-new-laptop-time/#findComment-1458388 Share on other sites
Guest Jimbob
i'm looking to spend under £1000 but the main issue is VSTs. Anyone on here run Ableton on a Mac? Tessier Ashpool
Disclaimer: Opinions are like assholes, and I have one. I think you can get a lot more for less on a PC and, frankly, I think Apple has abandoned the "hardcore user" market. I've had some bad experiences with their hardware, as have friends of mine who do primarily Graphic Design. Seems like maxing out what you do on a Mac leads to serious hardware issues down the line, their "tech support" is probably less educated than you, and their warranties are a ripoff. Don't get me wrong, they are pure sex, and there is a lot of "user friendliness" if you just want a home computer, but I really would steer away from them if you are going to be investing time in making music on it (especially if you have a lot of VST's etc. you have collected over the years that you like). You'll save yourself money and, although there are issues with any system, I think that PC's tend to have more options in regards to upgrading/third party software/etc. Basically, everything Maximus said I concur with. PS Someone please feel free to quote the first line and change the "I have on" to "I am one" Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide Tessier Ashpool's signature Hide all signatures Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/61472-new-laptop-time/#findComment-1458480 Share on other sites
acid1
Yeah PCs for the win. Yesterday my PC was acting screwy so I de-fragged my HD but I wasen't happy with the overall performance. So I was able to go into my BIOS and make a RAID strip for my two harddrives. After that I just updated a few registry settings, ran Adaware, and bam, now my PC is running fine next to all the bloat-ware I got my new Dell. The PC is streamlined to keep you making music, and not spending all day long installing adobe updates and performing mindless maintenance tasks. Not to mention that when there are problems with my PC, I have THE BEST of THE BEST costumer service to help me through all these tiny issues and details, all while being able to navigate through the draconian Windows policies and stable hardware drivers I don't need to update at all. Guest Jimbob
Cheers guys, some helpful info here, probably just confirming what I already suspected though. One of my best mates works for PC World/Currys so it's in his interest to sell me a shiny new Mac, the prick Currently though it's a toss up between a HP with an i3 or an i5 for an extra £100 Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/61472-new-laptop-time/#findComment-1458712 Share on other sites

PS. get soulseex, i used it on my mac and when i switched to pc i found soulseek was total crap compared to it.
