Quantities measured in grams would be required to achieve destructive effect comparable with conventional nuclear weapons; one gram of antimatter annihilating with one gram of matter produces 180 terajoules, the equivalent of 42.96 kilotons of TNT (approximately 3 times the bomb dropped on Hiroshima - and as such enough to power an average city for an extensive amount of time). Who ever develops this will definitely be the next world power. I'm beginning to question their motives. splesh
It's bad enough that there are still nuclear weapons in countries' arsenals, but nooo, we also need to worry about anti-matter weapons. Making anti-matter weapons would be such a delicate, expensive, arduous and for now undo-able process I'm not too certain it will ever happen let alone in the near future. Basically what I'm saying is don't worry about it for now. vamos scorcho
when i first heard about the LHC i felt a bit paranoid. i'd read there would be black hole and all that. of course that was ridiculous. i can't say that the fear of "mad" scientists in high places without proper regard for the consequences of their findings was completely irrational. i don't know. the possibilities are endless! Guest disparaissant
while it would be horrible if they did weaponize this stuff, it doesn't produce radiation, right? so yeah loads of death all at once, but no lingering repurcussions? lesser of two evils? i mean still fucked up but certainly not "we're going to kill EVERYTHING" fucked up. Redruth
Quote "How do you store something that explodes with enough energy to destroy a city block when it comes into contact with just about anything? Antimatter is not something that can be found by itself in a jar on a table," comments Gerald Share of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington D.C. in a Space.com interview. "Once the antimatter forms it has to be quickly channeled into special high-tech tanks called ‘Penning Traps.’ Inside, magnetic fields hold the antimatter suspended in a total vacuum and keep it from bumping into the tank walls. Currently, only three particle colliders on Earth can even make and store antimatter: Brookhaven National Laboratories on Long Island, New York; Fermi National. Accelerator outside of Chicago; and CERN west of Geneva, Switzerland. Even these three machines together only make a tiny amount." “Right now, only about 84 billionths of a gram of antiprotons are made worldwide,” according to Los Alamos physicist Steve Howe. "Making antimatter isn’t cheap, antimatter is the most expensive substance on Earth,” says Dave Dooling of NASA, “about $62.5 trillion a gram.” Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/61537-first-antimatter-atom-is-trapped/#findComment-1460092 Share on other sites
