i've been really getting into trying to make electronic music sound more 'natural' lately, i haven't heard much else that is like that, except for 70s electronic stuff where it was unavoidable due to technology limitations. is there much in the way of electronic music that exploits the cloudy, lofi sound of having too many effects in a chain, while still retaining melodic sensibilities? if so, post some!

also you might like some chillwave, i'm hooked on it

as far as making stuff sound more natural, i've heard good things about mastering with a VCR - adds a nice bit of noisy warmth and a buttload of weird vhs compression. and you can get some interesting effects by maxing out the dBs into the VCR

awesome. thanks for the recommendations! yeah i forgot about chillwave, i've got neon indian's album 'psychic chasms', that comes close to what i'm after. and good call re: mastering to vhs. i was thinking of mastering to cheap audio cassette, but vhs might be a bit better. i love tape compression, regardless. i need to find an old tape recorder though!

you might like some stuff by Nommo Ogo, they are a live oriented synthesizer ensemble group that is more inspired by the process of old 70s electronic music than pure retro fetishism reconstruction of the 70s/80s like com truise or zombi. also check out Strange Life records, Legowelt's label.

through the years, a man peoples a space with images of provinces, kingdoms, mountains, bays, ships, islands, fishes, rooms, tools, stars, horses and people. shortly before his death, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the image of his own face.

Awesome thread, I've got some listening to do!

Nachtsmeer has some good stuff on his webpage that definitely has an early electronica vibe. Many of these sound like background music from early 80s b movies (in a good kind of way). Alien8 was released by Skam, and is one of the hidden gems in their catalog... too bad the full length album never materialized.

Someone posted Matrix Metals a while back with a different (great) video that seems to have disappeared now, but this is the official one:

Yep, but you might need to try out a few different machines. Many later machines don't give you the option of using the linear mono track (which is where the action really is), and they all have different limiters and gain structures. I've been through quite a few decks and they all sound very different.

More "chillwave" or hypnagogic pop/glo-fi/whatever...I dunno, I agree with Awepittance's discription. If you dug Neon Indian, I'd recommend these (though I actually don't like Neon Indian that much)

repeated for lack of notice, these tracks are fucking amazing

yeah sorry i haven't really had the time to check these out, but yeah there's some great stuff there. and in this thread in general! nothing quite like what i had in mind but pretty close. especially that K2 track. a friend recently introduced me to sun araw, i'll have to give it a listen. and the last track in your post is pretty great too.

good post atop. i'm all about hype williams, james ferraro etc, matrix metals. and most of the loads of self released lo-fi cassette drone/hypnogogia is generally surprisingly enjoyable.

modey if you liked the K2 check out james ferraro. i'm pretty sure that dude has made shitloads of music that more or less sounds the same as that.

Pixarni is a recent 2010 one that i thought was pretty good.

james f and his skating buddy spencer clarke are exactly what i came into this thread to recommend - glad to see someone already got there. jimmy's probably my favourite artist releasing music at the moment. they're great live, too, and very friendly guys. talk to spence about the coconuts in pacific city and watch his eyes lite up.
