Guest bassface
Is MAX/MSP worth the price? I downloaded the demo and have been fooling around with it and it seems very powerful, but is it really worth the $600 price tag? I am a college student so I can probably get an educational discount, but it will most likely still be fairly pricely. Could any experienced users way in on this subject? Thanks Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/62089-is-maxmsp-worth-the-price/ Share on other sites
soundwave
you could find a G2 engine for the same price which is easier to use and will hold its value tried the demo and couldnt get along with it, found it.more to be an engineering tool than an instrument. i draw the line with code programmg, thats all i have to say Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/62089-is-maxmsp-worth-the-price/#findComment-1473856 Share on other sites

Swerm
Give PureData a go, it's very similar to max (although not as pretty visually), but it's free. PureData is supposed to be less "stable" than Max but I've had no problems with it. Swerm
I think I'd buy max over photoshop yeah...but give PureData a whirl before spending any cash, patching is a big step if you're a producer (I'm assuming you are interested in the audio side of these programs), and it will definitely give you a feel for it. Max/MSP looks so much nicer though I'll agree. I had a torrented Max/MSP a couple of years ago and used it for a few months but gave up and got PureData later on...I found a lot more help to learn PureData also. There's a really good set of tutorials on youtube for it that take you through patching in a sort of educational course style format. (and so on) also this - http://www.pd-tutorial.com/ Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/62089-is-maxmsp-worth-the-price/#findComment-1600039 Share on other sites

(and so on) also this - http://www.pd-tutorial.com/ I had the exact same experience and stuck with PureData extended. It indeed does look like ass, but you have almost all the same functionality as Max/MSP with it and I found its a bit easier on the CPU if you are utilizing the audio objects right. And what swerm said: http://www.pd-tutorial.com/ is the easiest way to get into pd without having to decipher all the trigonometry equations in one of Miller Puckett's books. Also, if you go down the pd route, print out this: http://puredata.info/docs/manuals/pdrefcards/pd-refcard/view Edited July 17, 2014 by Entorwellian Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide Entorwellian's signature Hide all signatures When A Heron Turns BlackNorthern Flicker Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/62089-is-maxmsp-worth-the-price/#findComment-2190340 Share on other sites
Keyxox
i'd pay a million $ if i have them just that i don't have to look at pd. such ugliness. i really respect pd cause it's free (just let it stay out of my sight!)
