Guest Iain C
List them here. Low are pretty heavily into the Mormonism: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ai-5tDAuYWU Beck and the Incredible String Band are serious Scientologists: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPIAEVJ5oF0 Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens) is a high-profile convert to... you guessed it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q29YR5-t3gg Now, I'm not a religious man. In fact, in the words of Robert Kilroy-Silk, "I think they're all false". But I've got a prurient interest in the religious beliefs of high-quality musicians. So if you know any others, spin 'em out here. The more exotic and outlandish the better - Christians are ten-a-penny in Western music but if there's anyone whose love of Jesus is particularly surprising, do shed some light. Guest disparaissant
huh i didn't know low were mormons. weird. donny and marie are mormons (not surprising) and gladys knight converted a while back. i guess my parents saw her do some "soulful" renditions of the incredibly white and boring mormon hymns. prince is a hardcore jehovah's witness now. no more partying like it's 1999 anymore for him... no more partying at all. Guest Iain C
they're mormons alright. my friend went to see them a couple of weeks ago and they even closed off the concert with a "god bless". what's more, i read an interview with alan sparhawk where he talked about his struggles with cannabis and how he worries that he's setting a bad example to LDS youth. also, my housemate tom claims that he and mimi parker were married at the age of 14 - but take that with a grain of salt. also, i heard that about prince. he's also a hardcore homophobe. he's a pretty disgusting human being, actually. and i never really liked his music. Guest Iain C
in the last few years of his life, committed goth and general tonk-man Pete Steele re-embraced roman catholicism: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cTU0Q4Uw4I Quote There are no atheists in foxholes, they say, and I was a foxhole atheist for a long time. But after going through a midlife crisis and having many things change very quickly, it made me realize my mortality. And when you start to think about death, you start to think about what’s after it. And then you start hoping there is a God. For me, it’s a frightening thought to go nowhere. I also can’t believe that people like Stalin and Hitler are gonna go to the same place as Mother Teresa. i have a lot of respect for pete steele despite his theological ignorance - mother teresa was, in many respects, a big twat. but pete was one of the tonkest men in music and had a brilliant sense of humour. sadly, this neil young cover is my favourite song of theirs - which isn't to say they didn't have some good songs. Guest disparaissant
nope, he converted to jehovah's witness-ness in like 2001 or something, and then went COMPLETELY off the rails. here's the actual quote btw Quote "God came to Earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, 'Enough.'" also, george harrison was a hare krishna, wasn't he? at least briefly? i know nina hagen and boy george both were as well. and i think most of the members of the x-ray spex became such. Capsaicin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSNvdLpLx-0 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_ra#Philosophy Quote Sun Ra presents a unified conception, incorporating music, myth, and performance into his multi-leveled equations. Every aspect of the Sun Ra experience, from business practices like Saturn Records to published collections of poetry to his 35-year career in music, is a manifestation of his equations. Sun Ra seeks to elevate humanity beyond their current earthbound state, tied to outmoded conceptions of life and death when the potential future of immortality awaits them. As Hall has put it, 'In this era of 'practical' things men ridicule even the existence of God. They scoff at goodness while they ponder with befuddled minds the phantasmagoria of materiality. They have forgotten the path which leads beyond the stars.'[16] Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/62103-musicians-with-wacky-religious-beliefs/#findComment-1473942 Share on other sites
