I am totally blown away. I can´t play the piano, so entering midi data into the computer is a pain in the a.. for me. Not any more. Has anybody 850 bucks?

Is there any experience out there? How does it feel? Gimme comments, please. I´m so exited, I just can´t hide it.

looks cheesy imo.

Just get an ipad and use touch osc to build any interface you want... Cheaper, and less dorky.

That is the most embarrassing thing I've ever seen.

The buttons are all the same size, so you'd likely have the same problem as the fake Rock Band pro guitar they came out with - not being able to tell the strings apart well enough. I'm sure there's better/cheaper ways to adapt guitars into MIDI controllers.

This is such a better option. Plus you wont look like a geeky retard.

If you want to be retro and hipster about it, get one of these.

i have always wanted one of those, if only for the cheese factor. plus, i hear the "mandolin" setting is to die for.

i've been mulling over throwing some kind of midi pickup on my currently disassembled and stripped gibson sg. anyone know a good setup? i've heard good things about those roland GK series things but i've read so many conflicting things (need to get a midi thing, that costs an assload, etc etc.)

I looked into getting a midi pick up for my guitar. Seemed like it would cost a fuckload.

Hehe, everybody hates it, why did I already know that before posting? ;)

[icannotQuote] Just get an ipad and use touch osc to build any interface you want... [\IcannotQuote]

Yeah, an Ipad. Really? I think Ipads are cheesy. Seriously. It is the left hand that interests me, all these knobs. If you know how to play the guitar, these knobs should work like a charm. They don´t come with an ipad. And btw, how much does an Ipad cost? maybe better not buy one.

[icannotQuote]

Things I would buy before that:

A real guitar

Guitar hero

pc

[\IcannotQuote]

Real Guitar: I already have two of them. Since 15 Years.

Guitar hero: Played it at a friends House. Liked the "party fun effect", then forgot about it...

PC: I have one at home and loadz of them at work (renderfarm, I am a 3D guy), so I guess i beat ya ;)

But why all these things first? Especially point two...

[icannotQuote]The buttons are all the same size, so you'd likely have the same problem as the fake Rock Band pro guitar they came out with - not being able to tell the strings apart well enough...[\IcannotQuote]

Erm... I don´t think that. Have you ever played on stage? It´s fuckin dark there. You have to know where the strings and frets are or you should give up playing at all. Most musicians really often even close there eyes for a while for the "Show effect". How could they do that without knowing where their fingers have to go? You could argue that with playback, ok ok, ok, but I don´t really need eyes for playing the guitar, except for finding that goddamn pickup all the time, so I guess it´s OK, but I wanna rant a little more cuz it´s Monday and I have to get my creative juices somewhere. So, if you ride the bicycle you don´t stare at your feet if they meet the pedals all the time, do you? :)

[icannotQuote]yeah looks pretty lame. A real guitar with a midi pickup would be much more expressive.[\IcannotQuote]

Any experiences there? A midi pickup was pretty expensive when I wanted to do that. And I did not want to use my beloved Guitar for it. So actually I´d have to buy a good guitar and a Midipickup.

How does the midi data come out, in terms of expression (bending for example, chords, flageoletts, ghost notes, etc.) ? are there good pickups and bad ones? Which companies should I look for and which are to avoid?

[icannotQuote]Plus you wont look like a geeky retard...[\IcannotQuote]

Erm, but I am one! :)

The Casio Midi Guitar MG510, is it good in terms of the data you get out of it? Is it good in terms of playing (like a normal guitar wo. midi)? Any other alternatives?

Thanks for all the replies. And now keep the guitar to midi tips section in here alive with posting more infos and tips and such here. I am really interested in a solution, because my pianoplaying really sucks and I hate fiddling around with that. Entering notes with a guitar would be much easier for me.

And geeky stuff can be posted to, for the sake of nerdism. Happy Christmas. Whatever. :)

i'm not sure about pricing but i'm sure a guitar midi pickup would cost less than one of these. also i think the roland pickups don't require any holes to be drilled in the guitar in order to mount it.

as for expressiveness, i think they're pretty good, i haven't actually had any experience with midi pickups but from what i've heard from people and what i've heard on recordings, if you set it up right you can make it pretty expressive. bends, chords, velocity, whatever.

and re: dark stage, i think one of these would be pretty hard to play without looking at the screen, with a guitar you can feel the strings, with this you just have a flat glass screen, looks like it'd be pretty damn hard to play like a real guitar, especially in a live setting. it's kinda cool that the input method on the screen can be changed according to the sounds, but for something like that to be practical, i'd probably rather have it at a 90 degree angle so i can see what's happening on the screen without tilting the unit upwards.

I recently dug a bit more into the thematic Guitar notes to midi notes. So for now the most effective thing is the Axon AX 50, with a corresponding pickup, I think. Can that be confirmed? Or would you say it is totally bullshit and not recommendable? Or do you know any alternatives (equal in function and maybe cheaper)?

I´ll choose that device because it is said to have far less latency than the roland GI10 or GI20 one. I couldn´t find any other than these two. I mean, I could, but they weren´t what I want.

I want a guitarnotes-to-midi-notes-converter. Nothing more. I play, and my PC gets the midi-data. No sound modules and crapload of shit (why do they pack on more and more features which get obsolete in soooo many situations? Grmbl!!) and That Axon thingy does axactly that. And I think there are only 128 sounds built in (I may be wrong) which are of no interest for me anyway. I found another box, too. It had a really strange name (with a "peter" in it if I can remember correctly) and is sold for 99 dollars. No pickup needed, but it only analyses the output mono audio signal without velocity, so I only can play single notes, no chords, lame... erm, yes.

modey: You may be right with the lack of strings beeing difficult for the play-feeling. Maybe they should multitouch-strings in front of that screen (I mean strings that check where and when the finger touched it. And then if you want alternative methods you can put the strings away. I´m not english natively, I mean, you put them away with a mechanism like window opening. Or the one that is like the things outside the window that make your room dark if you want it. Basically turn them away or let them slide into the corpus via spring-mechanism.) Got me?

But I think, that flat screen is not a bugger this much, because in the context of the whole guitar form, and your arm, you´ll mostly notice where your hand will go, even if it´s dark like in an asshole by night (last bit "stolen" by early element of crime) So that isn´t a real problem. Or is it?

Maybe discussing about wether it is good to play or not is obsolete as long I did not test it yet. I hope it will come out soon as you can only preorder it on their site atm.

And how is an Ipad supposed to replace a guitar? I want something that has an advantage over other "interfaces" because I have experience in using it. It turned out, the most effective "interface" for me for getting notes and melodies into the computer nondestructively is a guitar, because I play it like 15 years now. Experience in keyboarding: like 3 days (calculating everything together) Experience in Ipad: zero.

Guitar wins. IPad looses dramatically.

:)
