SQUIDLID
Luke's done some amazing Jungle tracks under his Amen Andrews alias, many of these tracks reference classic jungle tunes a lot of which are highly sought after and rather rare. Here's a thread to compile the originals via youtube clips or mp3. It might be good to pair them with youtube clips of his versions for comparison. Hopefully I can pass on a bit of knowledge and you can too! Here's one to start off: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fo1rOjd1bBo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEl3yNf61wE Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/62667-viberts-reworking-referencing-of-rare-jungle-tracks/ Share on other sites
SQUIDLID
Both tracks are absolutely killer, although Vibert's updated production is much cleaner and punchier. Clearly the tracks share little other than the soundclash patois sample, but I'm certain Luke was influenced by this track. Aphex even mentioned in an interview that the Bass Master Warriors had influenced him despite them only having one release. Here's another one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnM4FidH9kc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shHFUN9sEGE This one's clearly more of a reworking, and a blinding one at that, the machine gun drums and insane warping bass are incredible! It's worth noting that there are quite a few jungle tracks bearing the title Screwface although I believe this version is the only one which samples the film 'Marked For Death', please correct me if I'm wrong. SQUIDLID
Both serious heavyweight tracks here, Splash's 'Babylon' was a major Jungle hit at the time so less of a rare one but it deserves mentioning just because it's a blatant influence and so sick, the remixes that came out during Jungle's hay-day are a treat too (I'm a particular fan of Trace's reworkings)! Luke's version brings a certain ravey quirkiness that only he can really master to the track and the stuttering of the vocals and deep bass keeps it heavy and kills it on the dancefloor. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbPHbAyRSko http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgVPSLT3bpA Edited January 4, 2011 by Cellar Door Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/62667-viberts-reworking-referencing-of-rare-jungle-tracks/#findComment-1488846 Share on other sites
SQUIDLID
Slightly off topic for a bit, I thought I may as well mention the use of the Ohio Players 'Funky Worm' in '1 Shot Killer Pussy'. It's a seminal funk track which clearly influenced Dr Dre and many others, although Luke uses a slightly less well known part albeit just as funky. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEscJWErZ0I Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/62667-viberts-reworking-referencing-of-rare-jungle-tracks/#findComment-1488856 Share on other sites
SQUIDLID
Here's another one, one of the classics is a nice rare 10" pressing on green vinyl by an unknown artist on Jet Star Records called 'Jungle Music All Night'. It's got some really tasty samples and a decent dose of humour / weirdness. Cutty Rank's Limb by Limb remixed by Marvellous Caine is clearly the main inspiration though with the 'Play their bloody Jungle music all night' sample in this one too as well as the same melody riff as in the Amen Andrews version and 'get mash up' sample. Vibert's track uses the same sample from the film 'Babylon' to great effect, with all sorts of other insane samples including Lee Scratch Perry and the same soundclash sample as Manix in their classic anthem 'Special Request'! Luke's track also uses some immense mentazm's and severely stuttery staccato drum edits in absolutely rinsing style. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7JVvBvtG-I&feature=player_embedded http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhBLcc7iVNQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFL2xboz2Ag Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/62667-viberts-reworking-referencing-of-rare-jungle-tracks/#findComment-1488878 Share on other sites
SQUIDLID
There are of course lots of excellent remixes of Marvellous Caine's Hitman / Cutty Ranks Limb By Limb, one of my favourites is DJ Hype's version where the melody is made to sound like it's a balloon losing air, the Dream Team one is pretty heavy and there's a few other versions by Marvellous Caine including a VIP mix of course. SQUIDLID
In this track Luke takes a jungle track by Asylum (the main part being the vocals by MC Bassman) and flips it into a grime track accompanied by samples from a Dr Who Audio book - Dr Who & The Pescatons. While this is one of my least favourite tracks on his Amen Andrews Vs Spac Hand Luke album I still enjoy it, I always thought Asylum's version could be bettered though (Mickey Finn did sort of manage this on the A.W.O.L. Live album to an extent, although it's not an amazing remix) and for me Luke's track falls a bit short considering what he's capable of when he gets it right. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DI5weJIFnQk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHq2-wmH9wo Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/62667-viberts-reworking-referencing-of-rare-jungle-tracks/#findComment-1490524 Share on other sites

SQUIDLID
Luke takes inspiration from Bizzy B & Peshay's classic Star Wars sampling hardcore track and absolutely kills it. I've also included Bizzy B & Equinox's more recent reinterpretation as an example too because it's so storming. All three are a good example of how mental the dancefloor can get and still just about hold it together. I think part of the reason I love Jungle and Hardcore so much is some of these genres output is so barmy and out there while pushing what (quite limiting) technology was capable with at the time. I can't think of a current musical style or scene that really encapsulates that inventiveness and forward thinking while remaining as enjoyable (most of the producers featured on this site come very close though). I know Luke is recreating this feeling with more modern technology and perhaps even dare I say a poppier edge, but I think he's one of very few producers who can still evoke the same feeling of classic Jungle. I probably enjoy Luke's version slightly more because I find more humour in it and a it's a touch more light hearted. The twisted acid in his version is an interesting alternative to Bizzy's paranoia inducing mentazms. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Heuh3tAYCX0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PVWcXnLDY4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kml7E4fhzj8 Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/62667-viberts-reworking-referencing-of-rare-jungle-tracks/#findComment-1490557 Share on other sites
SQUIDLID
Thanks for the encouragement! I'd really enjoy it if someone took the time to do something similar with Luke's Kerrier District stuff, I'd love to hear what he's referencing in those tracks. I know he has a habit of paying homages to music he loves and putting his own twist on them. There's certainly a few acid lines in his music that refer to older Acid House tunes or Rave tracks, unless I'm imagining it...? Solo Strike
Let's try to save page two of this thread shall we and revisit One Shot Killer Pussy? Amen Andrews - One Shot Killer Pussy Alongside the obligatory Rasta patois mentioned before, this tune obviously samples Alter-8 at the beginning, alongside the main sample from this '96 jungle tune on Dread Recordings, the label ran by Ray Keith, who this tune is actually by. Really simple but effective tune, I'd quite like to know where the high pitched G-funk style synth line comes from originally (possibly somewhere horribly obvious) Dr Wootang - Original Wootang http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGiyIYh4D6Y&feature=player_embedded#!
