Appears to be a group of artists who do visuals for music shows, Aphex being one of them.

im not art critic, but i wonder how this compares on an intelligence level to the music it goes along with. is it just basically smeone screwing around with premiere/afx/flash or is it ground breaking unprecedented shit?

This is the guy who wrote the Kinect code:

Surprisingly, I received an email a short while later from WeirdCore who was in the process of working on live visuals for Aphex Twin’s new years eve show in Rome. He had shown some of the videos to Aphex and they were positively received.

I ended up creating a Cinder app that had 10 preset modes and various parameter controls that WeirdCore could interact with in realtime during the show. The modes ranged from simple 3D point clouds to variations of Body Dysmorphia.

WeirdCore did a fantastic job integrating the Kinect content with the other feeds consisting of visuals created with QC, MaxMSP/Jitter, VDMX, and v002.

I don't have experience with the Mac visualization tools (QC, VDMX, v002) but MaxMSP/Jitter can get as complicated as you want. Doing a solid VJ performance integrating the live video feeds and face mapping, displacement map warping etc. all realtime probably took a fair bit of coding along with artistic skill and vision.

so the guy wrote the code for the kinect integration and that seems to be the highlight of the visual thing and is kind of cool i guess. what about all the other stuff though, is it just prerendered cgi with real time visual effects or something or is it all complex algorithmically generated stuff similar to what the kinect is doing?

i love in that clip on the guys page where it shows aphex twin at the end of his set moving his head around in front of the kinect sensor and it shows up on the screen and everyone is all shouting and hollering like all hes doing is moving his frickin head around. lol reminds me of that show i saw a year or so ago where he was playing current value and public enemy and everyone thought it was like the greatest show in the world

all they had to cheer to at the end was aphex twin shittin on the crowd witha bunch of dissonant frequencies, if they were real aphex fans they wouldnt be cheering like they are at some tiesto rave, half the people there prolly are just rich socialites who dont give 2 shits about aphex anyway, this is why they were more reactive to some easily digestible visual candy effects more than any of the tracks he dropped im sure.

i think aphex aside, it actually speaks for the state of electronic music these days, would you ever see them using lasers and fog at a classical concert no lol. the music is mostly shit which is why they need to have all this eye candy crap to keep people interested - cause well, the music certainly isn't going to do it.

...or more to do with the fact that there's not much to watch as far as instrumentation or front man antics. & I think the lasers and fog specifically have more to do with being staples of electronic shows/rave culture.
