Which do you use and why? Or do you have other such suggestions?

Personally I like RYM because Discogs looks to damned complicated.

hmmm, what do you mean, complicated?

personally, i don't have almost any experience with RYM, but in terms on release information, discogs has given me pretty much everything that it is possible.

i spend hours and hours there, browsing recommendation pages and user lists, and i keep finding new music everyday!

Those websites have different purposes, you can't really compare them... Discogs is more useful for tagging music and its content is more complete (for what I listen to). I go to RYM if I want to know where to start with an artist, and I go to Discogs if I want to know if the tracklist is correct when I download music or if I want to purchase an album that is out of stock or too expensive in other stores.

absolutely.

dunno about RYM, but discogs has a wonderful organization and structure.

the recommendation pages usually display repetitive results, for instance: a certain IDM record is frequently compared with the classic or, lets say 'best' records of the such genre, so it's basically giving always the same recommendations, but browsing user made lists or exploring label pages might bring amazing discoveries.

i have been exploring 90's techno/idm releases for the past three months, and i get new stuff every single time, top quality stuff!

First impressions of RYM: This is shit, I dont want some nobodies opinion. I want the facts and where I can buy it.

I use RYM for both of these.

I knew about Discogs long before RYM, but it seemed mostly focused on electronic music at the time. It's much more expansive now. But one day I decided to catalog my collection online and RYM seemed more complete for the variety of genres I listen to. Also there are far more reviews, which are sometimes helpful when trying to decide what album to pick up. Also, there are user lists that have proven to be a great resource for discovering new albums. Although it seems Discogs has that too. It's a toss up really. I do hate how RYM looks, so 90s. At least Discogs is a little fresher looking.

For those trying to decide which to use for cataloging your music, just pick a handful of obscure albums from your collection, representing several different genres, and see which site has them and has the most info on it.

Fuck RYM indeed, a pretty pointless and well over-rated site as far as I'm concerned (nice to see that reflected in this thread). Discogs, however, has always been awesome. Can't really see what's complicated about it either.

I use both. RYM has it advantages. If I want to know what records to start with of an artist I don't know, RYM is a good place to search (used allmusic until recently). But the thing with the narcissistic hipsters is at least partly true. And a lot of agressive and ignorant people. 104 people have given the new Kanye West the lowest rating 0.5, probably not because they have listened to the album and really thinks that it's as poor as an album can get but because they hate him and because they are annoyed by the fact that it's the top-rated album of 2010. Another example is this 1-star review of Quaristice: "Not into it, but I suppose this record isn't any better or worse than any of their other releases." RYM is still a nice place to check out new stuff.

I love discogs, especially for finding sellers with stuff I'd have no chance of finding at a local record shop. My one small gripe is that when I like an album and go the recommendations on the page (perhaps to discover new albums I might like), its always the same old Burial, Autechre...

RYM - wow, i feel like i'm searching on Alta Vista. fucking brilliant 90's vibe. i'm converted.

Indeed, it looks fucking horrendous...and is about 10x worst when not logged in...so it's not doing anything for attracting new members. But I find it very useful, despite this. It's actually a wonder I can look past it, being a web designer. I resisted for many years, though.

reviews on discogs tend to be far more constructive than on RYM.

RYM is full of flavour of the month hipsters that love to rock the boat just to be different but in the end they just embarrass themselves.

True but I find that RYM covers a lot more territory than Discogs. Maybe it's quantity over quality when it comes to reviews, but I know which to ignore or take with a grain of salt and which to take seriously. People can be dicks, for sure. I wish there was a way to rate down reviews. You can flag them as spam or inappropriate, but those options don't seem to qualify for most. What's irritating are all the "oh I can't wait for this!" and "it's probably gonna suck" type of comments. That's not a review and this isn't Facebook or Twitter, you dicks. The mods need to clean that kind of crap up.

Downraters and upraters are the worst thing about RYM. Aside from the look.
