Output to MIDI Question

Recommended Posts

So I got my Midi (Privia PX1-130) and got Renoise to work with it but couldn't get the Privia to output the same sound as my computer was in renoise.

For instance I would hit a Key and hear one sound Via the VSTI on my computer and the normal Piano sound on my Privia.

Is there a way I can get the sound being outputted on my Privia to match that of my Computer?

Or is my understanding of Midi's so wack such a question is out of the question.

Its connected Via USB. I tried googling but got nowhere.

I don't use renoise but does the vst channel have setting for a midi input? if so there that should give you option to select the midi device to the channel.

Also, check the manual on the privia on how to change it to local and external use. It maybe turned to external midi control, So it needs to be on local also.

These are the MIDI options Renoise has MIDI.png

Replace None with my MIDI Controller and thats the settings I've tried and still got no sound coming from my Casio.

The Privia seems to have no options to switch from External use to local. Only has a USB Mode which switches it from MIDI USE to accessing files off of the Keyboards Memory Bank. I've also looked through the manual and it says the same thing.

Is it possible mine can't do what I'm asking? I thought all USB Midis could do that?

The IN A should give you an option for the Privia i would assume or say something like Midi in or Priva usb in. those need to be set. You need to set the out as well.

Also if want it to play back when you hit play you need a midi channel output to the Privia as the channel will only be outputting to the VST.

I dunno, someones doing the renoise is gonna knows

Once setting the main midi you need to sort it on the channels as well. Sorry if i am not helping

Right, below the Pic I tell you that all the Nones are Set to my Casio Midi Controller AKA my Privia.

This is the Manual I have which only tells you how to connect to the PC, Thankfully I could do that much http://support.casio.com/pdf/008/Web_PX130E1B.pdf

But I found this and I'm currently looking through it.

Does it actually support receiving Midi In instructions or is the keyboard's USB port just sending Midi Out data (Therefore can only be used as a controller rather than a 'receiver' of Midi data ?)

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

wait, wait... start again. so you have got a Privia MIDI Keyboard (might want to mention what it is, I've never heard of Privia - had to look it up) and you say you've "got it working" with renoise - what do you mean by this? sounds like it is not working with renoise from what I can decipher from your post.... anyway, you press a key on your MIDI keyboard and you can hear one sound from whatever VST you have up, plus the General MIDI (GM) piano sound as well? have I got that right? if so I will need to know what AUDIO interface you are using (if anything) - ie how does the sound go from your computer to your monitors? have you even got monitors?

also - you are aware of what MIDI is and what it is not I take it? ie MIDI is NOTHING to do with sound - only notation/control. sure you know this but best to be certain.

it could be that your audio device settings are incorrect, or your keyboard is transmitting on multiple MIDI channels and triggering your computer's GM sound set inadvertently, or your MIDI device settings are wrong, or anything really...

get back with more info.

Basically he can send notes from his keyboard to his 'puter, just not from the 'puter back to the keyboard (the keyboard has speakers on it). Presumably so he can play a piano midi file on reason and it'll sound nice and sparkley on the digital piano

I'm still going with the keyboard not supporting MIDI IN through the USB port, but that's just a snap (and possibly incorrect) first judgement.

This maybe right yeah. But i would also say, the easiest way to hear the note when played is to have Local On. But if it does recieve midi it needs a channel and ouput to send the info back when in playback mode.

i've just read a bit further and seen that the Privia is a Casio Digital Piano - with built in speakers as you say mcbpete.... so basically you want to use it as an Audio/MIDI interface. yeah, don't think you can do that. only work around is if the Privia has External Audio In and you route the computer's audio output back into the Privia so it plays on it built in speakers...

Digital Pianos are not generally designed to be part of an extensive MIDI set up though, so if I were you I'd just use it as a really nice weighted MIDI controller for playing VSTs etc. All the actual audio output from your computer should ideally be sent to a nice pair of monitors, or simply your Hi Fi.

what - no. even if it does receive MIDI it will only play whatever piano sound you have selected on the Privia - MIDI is NOT AUDIO. jesus. if he wants to get(and I quote) "the sound being outputted on my Privia to match that of my Computer", then this Privia thing MUST have an External Audio In channel (this may be a feature of the USB functionality, will need to check). If it ain't got that, then no dice simple as.

just to be 100000% clear:

he wants the sound that comes out of his Privia to be the same as whatever is playing on his computer (in his example, a sound created by a VST).

I'm going now, i've had my head done in.

Jesus yourself, i am assuming his machine (keyboard) is connected to speakers or whatever, im only working in midi not audio. It's likely it is making a sound on its own. JESUS

plz read the thread as to understand what it is that he actually wants to do - I highlighted it in big letters in an earlier post. he don't care two shit about playing MIDI notes into the Privia - he wants the noises that come out of the Privia to be the same as the noises his computer is making.

last post.

mcbpete has it right. This is what I want to do.. ignore anything else I've said sorry for the confusion.

I just thought MIDI would allow the sound on my PC to be sent through the USB and come out of my Privia's Speakers. I guess not?

Also the manual talks about MIDI settings but I have no Idea how to change or implement any of those settings. And it only seems to give me the option to Turn off the Piano Part (AKA Local Off)

So whats the verdict? I'm reading through some old posts.

Look I really appreciate yall trying to help, this is my first time operating an actually MIDI like this so please cut me some slack.

I press a key on my Privia it makes its nice Piano sound, that note I press on the Privia gets sent through the USB to my PC and Renoise Picks it up and outputs a sound (On my Computer Speakers) I've selected on my Selected VSTI.

Now I would like that sound made on my PC via the VSTI to go back through the USB to my Privia and out the speakers so I stop hearing my Privia's Piano Sound.

By sound you mean the note yeah? (as BCM said no 'sound' is actually transmitted down the midi cable just midi instructions like: Play note C - Octave 4, at volume 64, on channel 2). Yeah I get the feeling the Casio keyboard is only a 'one-way-street' when it comes to midi data - I remember trying to do the same thing with my really crappy Casio (that actually had separate Midi In and Out sockets) but in the few years that I had it I could only send notes to the lappy but never send notes from the lappy back into the keyboard. So I gave up.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

You can't send this info back through usb. If your Keyboard has an input for the speakers you would need to send the output of you sound device into that. you would then have to have local turned off. But some how i don't think any of this possible.

Ok thanks. I apologize for being a dumb ass. For some reason (even though its a MIDI) I figured sound could go through a USB cable (Which it can) but not in this case.

sell the Privia, get some monitors and a MIDI controller keyboard. or get some monitors, put your computer's audio out to those (or, like I said, just use your hi fi's aux in) and simply turn the volume down on the Privia - voila!

either way you need a way to amplify and monitor your computer's output that doesn't involve the Privia.
