Vaguely technical questions you'd like to ask Luke.

he seems pretty open compared to most of the watmm-related artists. maybe we should start pooling questions ("what microphones do you like?") in hopes that someone takes them to him?

Taken from another thread; this rang rather true to me. Keep it vaguely technical, more like "what's your favourite drum break" and "what equipment did you use to get effect X".

What I'd like to know personally, as previously said, is what microphones or field recorders does he use today? His recordings of his children have great fidelity; though maybe it's just the EQing.

Well I know he uses Reason pretty heavily partly because of the rack format as he likes a rack of machines and the limitations that go with it but a laptop is obviously more convenient than pure hardware

my two cents

- what's his favorite time of day to write music, if he has one?

- he's said he does 8-bar patterns on a _real_ 303 and samples it for reason or whatnot. does he still? if so, i'd like to hear some more words about when/how he samples hardware... just really iconic sounds like the 303? does he maybe make noises on a modular/etc for himself to drop in later, or is that too pedantic?

- is his atari st still about? dug it out at all in the last few years?

I'll try answering some of these questions from what I've gathered reading interviews with the guy:

q: what software and hardware does he prefer and why

a: reason. he talks about it a lot. he often says that if he had the possibility to use plugins he'd just mess with that all day instead of getting anything done. as for hardware he's a fan of the roland x0x's, which is quite obvious when hearing his stuff. his studio around 95, or something, seems to have been consisting of his atari st, a keyboard, mixer, effects units and a roland s760 sampler.

q: what's his favorite time of day to write music, if he has one?

a: night time. when everyone's asleep.

q: why was Phat Lab the only album that had pre-conceived ideas of prior to composing?

a: the label (rising high) called him and asked if he had made any ambient music, which is what they were into releasing at the time. he lied and said "yes" then made the album in a week or so. usually he's said he just works on tracks of any genre at any time not even deciding if it's 'wagon christ', 'luke vibert' or anything before putting an album together.

q: how does he compose melodies

a: Interviewer: You work with keyboards and samples, so are you playing melodies, are you constructing melodies from bits of sound?

Vibert: Oh yeah, quite a few, but usually not with electronic sounds but with a flute, or whatever.

q: What I'd like to know personally, as previously said, is what microphones or field recorders does he use today? His recordings of his children have great fidelity; though maybe it's just the EQing.

a: dunno. I think he mentions in an interview what software he uses to record with, but that's not really interesting is it. he's also mentioned he spends a lot of time EQing stuff 'til it sounds right to him.

so, yeah.

In addition to Reason, I saw somewhere that he uses Digital Performer for stuff like Rodulate, and Ace of Clubs... to sequence his analog type stuff.
