Guest blutac
I dont know if I should expect any replies because I should imagine this is mostly people further along than me, but looked back a few pages and couldnt find a newbie thread.. Just looking to get a bit of a setup together because Im about to start my gap year so Ive got a bit of time and saved up a bit of money finally. What would people reccomend for 500 quid, bearing in mind I currently own: shitty Dell Inspiron laptop korg electribe er-1 and have access to: logic (only for apple), microkorg, roland sh-101, korg kaoss pad I and 500 quid to spend potentially though Id rather it was a bit less, though I dont know how possible that is. I looked into soundcards a while back, seemed to be good ones for <100 quid. Obviously going to have to me mostly software (cracked) at this budget. Braintree
Personally, the only electribe really worth the money is the ESX. I bought one for about $300, but it was the used price, and I had my friend's discount [it was from his shop]. I'm sure you can get one about the same price through ebay, though. And if you're really pressed for cash, just download as many VST's as possible. There are some decent ones out there. I was actually thinking of getting a copy of logic and only using VST's. I would invest in some drum machines, too, if you want to go that route. I'm more into samplers than keyboards, so I'm not real sure what to suggest in that realm. Guest user
You have to decide for yourself what route you want to take, what way you want to work. Of course you can always change later but it's good to get some kind of idea beforehand. At this point I'd probably invest in a soundcard and a midicontroller. Guest taxman
if you don't have monitors or at least some good speakers, get some. i think that's about it for now, until you figure out your own style. Guest crystal
You can buy 1ghz computers for 50 quid off ebay. You can buy soundblaster live drives off ebay for about 10 quid off ebay. You can buy an SH 101 off ebay for about 200 quid. You can buy midi cables. You can buy an Atari ST for under 40 quid with sequencer software. You can buy monitors and an amp. Because you're spending a huge amount of money, I recommend buying things that will keep their value. Buy things that you can sell on again for the same or a bit less money. Things like software and the latest in digital technology will quickly go out of date and lose its value. Then you lose money. Losing money is not cool. Macs are cool but they are overpriced and go down in value quickly. and you can do most of the cool stuff on a piii 1ghz pc... monitors http://electronics.search.ebay.co.uk/monit...25QQsacatZ21162 amplifiers http://search.ebay.co.uk/samson-amp_W0QQfkrZ1QQfromZR8 Good luck. I bet you buy a digital keyboard for 400 quid and it goes down in value quickly instead of listening to me. Fair enough, it's your music, nobody elses. What's the point of doing it if it's not what you want. Good luck!! P.S. remember that most people are totally wrong when they recommend pair of monitos X or digital synthesizer B. They are totally full of shit. Ignore them and try and play on the machine yourself to see if you really like it. Ok, wor. Guest blutac
Thanks for all the advice! Just found out the music tech department at my school is upgrading all their hardware, and because their a charity their not allowed to sell the old stuff, so instead they're putting it all in a storage room under the school. Im talking about 20 power macs and 20 roland midi keyboards here... They don't even really need updating they work perfectly!!! wankers! Guest crystal
Don't buy monitors off ebay then Bluetac. Sorry for recommending that. It was a mistake. aeser said: renoise reaktor That's like paying 500 pounds for two packets of chewing gum, in a WASTING MONEY way of thinking. Or you could liken it to paying 500 pounds for two cans of dog food. Or you could liken it to paying 500 pounds for two CD's and some instruction manuals. What will those CD's be worth in a couple of years time? About the price of two cans of dog food. An SH-101 will still be worth about the same or more!
