So The Art of Dying alone was one of my top albums for the year. But someone recommended Return To Tonglu the other day.

I started listening to it this morning, and woah! Ive literally had it on repeat the whole day. This sound is so good, never really heard anything like this style before. I love it. Only 4 tracks, but 4 tracks of bliss.

Guest Makinami

"White Clouds Drifts On And On" under his real name (Brock Van Wey) is one of my favorite albums of all time. Way ahead from the rest of his work —which it's real good, but that album is superb—

I remember recommending bvdub to you because you've made a lot of loop-based ambient music. I'm glad you like.

Aye, I couldn't remember if you recommended it to me or not. 'Cause it seems like the kind of thing you listen to.

Ive so far found it hugely uninspiring. lacks imagination, originality, production.

Chassis, listen to his new album, it contains many samples of tribal voices. "Sanctuary" is my favorite ambient song of 2011 so far. :music:

I prefer the Intrusion reshapes of White Clouds Drifting On and On. The originals are alright too, but some of the vocal samples bug me.

thing is that i always found there was more than one interpretation of what ambient was trying to do. for me, it needs a musician's individual identity that i don't think a lot of people necessarily require.

closest i've come in recent years is stuff like tim hecker. clearly it's not quiet as ambient would be described by many as being - but it's ambient in that it has a character of it's own that creates an unusual atmosphere over it's duration, of it's own accord.

this, and i always found part of the experience in electronic forms of music was about the character that was added to it by the interest in the sounds that were being made - so a certain amount of decent recording is required to bring it to life, and i've not found that in a lot of stuff i've tried out in more recent times, which seems to try and hide behind the lo-fi aesthetic.

He's just my favorite right now, such an inspiration. Few can touch the type of atmospheres he creates imo. It's been great to get to (virtually) know him via email as well.

Having him remix one of my tracks has been a major highlight to say the least!

Don't sleep on We Were the Sun, right up there with his best...

See, I feel like White Clouds... really transcends its surface simplicity, not to mention its surface "cheesy-ness" (or new-age-y-ness, whatever you call it) to become something else altogether.

right. 'one last look at the sea', 'tribes at the temple of silence', 'the art of dying alone' i consider these to be legendary, important for any ambient music seeker to give immediate attention

white clouds is my fav too, but even then its the intrusion remix CD that gets the most play from me, especially that first track.

sanctuary and the house above the world are some of my fav tracks from him

songs for a friend i left behind is a good album too, although it was around this time that a lot of his albums sounded way too 'samey' for me

He did release about 8 albums last year, its natural that some of them are going to sound "samey".

This new one is different though, the percussion completely moves away from his norm. More acoustic sounding, though there still is a bit electronic drums in there for good measure.

Discovered this guy last night, amazingly emotional and therapeutic. Feels like a cathartic release of all the bad parts of yourself. Usually not that interested in ambient music that is overly emotional because it doesn't sound genuine to me, but i feel like bvdub really nails it and is masterful at evoking a particular emotion that he himself genuinely feels. I sort of feel this connection with the man, like I'm feeling what he's feeling. On a super critical note, his music does sound a bit too consistent but i don't mind because it all sounds good.

Only listened to one of his albums, Don't Say You Know and would give it a 9.5/10. Have no idea where to go in his discography so recommendations always welcome.

I love him! One Last Look At The Sea is amazing (and I think he gave it away for free?)

I missed this. Anyone know where I can (legally) acquire this album in FLAC? Cheers,

He has just released a new album on bandcamp! Only 365 copies, hand numbered and signed.

https://bvdub.bandcamp.com/

It is totally beautiful.

365 copies, personally hand numbered, signed, and sealed in embossed gold foil. these will never be re-pressed or re-issued.

no sound samples or streaming, please understand - this is the most involved, complete, and intense album i have ever made - over a two-year span, on two continents. this is, for me, the zenith of my ambient sound, and voice, to date. those who understand my sound, and my voice - i hope you can trust me, as i trust you. and that's who this is for. i'm asking you to take a leap of faith, and experience this as it should be - in its entirety, as it was meant to be - not flipped through and judged in 2-second intervals as you skip through sound samples or listen with half an ear while you're in your car, or at your friend's house.

i take a leap of faith every time i put my heart and my life on my sleeve, for all to hear, and this time i ask you to do the same... together we can return music to being a true experience - not just a distraction.

i am forever grateful for your trust and support.
