Please Give Me One Million Dollars

Recommended Posts

So this kid Craig I've met a couple times at parties had the brilliant idea around Thanksgiving to shoot a video asking the super wealthy for a million dollars. Basically he's just asking for a million dollars, for no particular reason, no strings attached. The second I saw it I was kicking myself for not thinking of it first, because I know how fucking crazy the internet is and that he would probably get it. Well guess what, he's getting a fucking MILLION DOLLARS.

I know it seems like a gag, but my old roommate helped Craig write this and is getting $50K once the million dollars is received and he is over the moon right now. So they at least BELIEVE they are getting a million dollars. Crazier shit has happened, I give him props for actually succeeding at a wacky get rich quick scheme. I've included all of the videos below.

This is the internet equivalent of the old posting in the newspaper where someone asks to be sent a dollar via the mail...

If I were a billionaire I would give a million to someone if they asked. I would probably be like Warren Buffett who pledged to give 99% of his wealth to philanthropy during his lifetime.

So to all you rich people out there, give me a starting capital of a million, I'll make it grow and donate 99% of it to charity during my lifetime.

the biggest illusion is yourself

What's funny (and probably not surprising) is that i genuinely nearly did this exact thing roughly 6-8 years ago. Seriously. I was just going to make an amusing email or letter and maybe personalise it slightly depending on who i was sending it to, simply requesting a million pounds.

I thought this guy was reasonably funny. His barely concealed glee in the last video was funny too.

How does he know the alleged millionaire isn't just some troll?

In fact, how does he know it isn't some millionaire troll not intending to actually hand over the cash?

Four on every block. All facing each other.

I was hoping he would go into economics and make a point about how fucked up our economy is in America.

  Quote
In the United States, wealth is highly concentrated in a relatively few hands. As of 2007, the top 1% of households (the upper class) owned 34.6% of all privately held wealth, and the next 19% (the managerial, professional, and small business stratum) had 50.5%, which means that just 20% of the people owned a remarkable 85%, leaving only 15% of the wealth for the bottom 80% (wage and salary workers). In terms of financial wealth (total net worth minus the value of one's home), the top 1% of households had an even greater share: 42.7%. Table 1 and Figure 1 present further details drawn from the careful work of economist Edward N. Wolff at New York University (2010).
