quick renoise question

I just started using renoise the other day and all is well, but I can't work out how to manually input a note (or effect or whatever), I can only record them, and I hate recording things. I read the tutorial and all it said was "these days you can just record everything in" or something like that. So how do you input notes?

edit: hmm, maybe i didnt understood you right...so- you can enter notes and pattern fx when you press "esc" and there is red box around pattern editor. It is called "record mode" but its more like input mode. :)

Just tried the record mode thing, and it's exactly what I was looking for - thanks! I'm getting the video tutorials anyway, cause they seem like they'll help
