triggering

i've kinda always wanted to know this. is it like when you get a sampler to play it's samples using a keyboard?

Yes.

MIDI notes are also triggers for their instruments.

really basic thing then

triggering can refer to a number of things - some analogue gear has trigger I/Os which might be used to trigger an arpeggiator or drum sound etc - for example my 626 has trigger outs (as well as midi) which can be routed into say a Juno 60's arp trigger inputs. my mbase_01 also has a trigger input which can be connected to pretty much anything - microphone, record, synth etc... works in a similar way to gate control.

Uh yeah it can mean a lot of different things. The most common use of the word in the music world is to describe when drummers use individual midi triggers on their bass drums, toms etc. to signal a module to trigger samples, drum sounds, or as you see in what I just found here TEH CHEESE.
