Anyone here ever take the ETS GRE or GMAT exam? I'm taking it on the 10th of February for grad school, been studying this book for the past 2 months.. but I really don't remember anything.. I'm a full-time student (finishing undergrad) and I have this bloody exam to take.. someone please reassure me that it isn't that bad.. I hate this.

the GRE is not too bad. i found the toughest thing is actually just getting used to the whole sitting down for x amount of hours to take the test. on that note, i would definitely take several electronic practice tests just to get acclimated to that weird computer testing crap.

helpful hint: in my small amount of studying, i mostly just reviewed vocabulary flashcards (highly recommend-- the version i used was made by Kaplan, i believe) and didn't mess much with the math. sure enough, those parts weren't bad, but the writing part where you crank out two essays right at the beginning on fairly impromptu topics can be rough if you haven't gotten some practice on speed-writing essays. that would be my greatest word of caution. my transitioning from writing lab reports every now and then to fleshing out two fairly detailed essays after a long break from paper writing was mentally fatiguing.

You're in good shape if you've been working with a book. I did a bunch of practice tests from a book/CD combo (back in '03 -- the test was different then!) and it turned out fine. Just keep practicing! And take the book's strategy tips into account.

Also, the GRE is (at least in my field) a pointless waste of a lot of money. Check it!

I took the GMAT and destroyed it. Took some classes and finished one of those books beforehand. If you know the book well you'll do fine. You really shouldn't be going into an MBA program right after undergrad though. It creates an under-experienced/over-educated (read: unhirable) person. But it's nice to take the GMAT right after undergrad if the math classes you took are still fresh. The score is good for five years.

  • 2 weeks later...

None of the vocabulary words will be any of the hundreds you practiced. It's irritating as fuck.

edit: Oh, and good luck!

i took the GMAT for fun once. fucking murdered it. got subsequently hired by a big pharma firm without so much as an interview. then as a dare from a friend i took the LSAT without studying and got into harvard law school immediately after faxing them my score and a xerox of my ass. the key to taking any standardized test is to stare at it until it starts shaking immediately after receiving it. then start humiliating its backround--things like its hometown (usually they are from fucking nowhere, iowa), its penchant for racially and socio-economically biased questions, its hopelessly pedestrian tastes in food and film. then whip out your own scantron. tell the test you dont even want to fucking look at it, and just fill your own scantron out without so much as popping the seal of the standardized test with your pencil. whilst filling out the scantron, only a few obsceneties about the test's mom will do, and then turn it in. finally, moonwalk out of the classrom whilst releasing a beautiful golden arc of piss that lands squarely onto the stack of handed-in standardized tests. that's it. oh and disabled bitch slap the janitor in the hallway of course.

i took the GRE in 2003 i think. i hate tests like this; i didn't study one bit, i just winged it. i honestly can't remember how i scored, but it must have been good enough because i was accepted to all the schools i applied for. the schools were ok, but not tops, probably top 20 - 40.

i can't remember much about the test, except that i was well prepared for it having a college education in engineering (math, science, etc. covered), and paying attention in english and grammar class. i figured it was pointless to cram for the vocab section. :cisfor:

took the GRE probably a decade ago or so (so i'm pretty sure the format and or scoring has changed in the interim. worst part was ore-test when i had to write - longhand - in cursive - the "i'm promise i'm not cheating parqgraph" cause i couldn't remember how to make half the letters. the test was cake, though.
