Toro Y Moi - Underneath The Pine

Toro Y Moi, everyone's favourite/least favourite hipsters (delete as applicable) drop their follow-up album to last years 'Causers Of This' this month.

I'm not sure what the Toro Y Moi temperature is like on this site, but I'm personally a very big fan. It sounds like this album has much more of a funk/disco vibe to it, and the samples I've heard thus far are excellent. Two tracks from the album below:

I did a thread about it in the general music discussion forum, probably should have been in here but there was more to it than just the new album so I stuck it there, and nobody cared anyway. There are Still Sound multitracks for download though so look into that:

I think he's excellent, Causers Of This is perfect in my opinion. I hadn't heard this 'new beat' one so cheers for that.

Not a problem.

Have you heard his single as 'Les Sins'?

Yeah, I came across this during the week. You can download it on boomkat.

I actually thought 'Causers of This' was the first Toro Y Moi record, but there's a 2009 album called 'My Touch' which is nice as well. This is the title track for anyone who hasn't heard it:

Looking forward to the new album. I did a remix under a new alias if anyone wants to check it:

I personally liked the chiller waves (lol) of Causers of This. This new album is crazy funky though. I'm diggin' it.

I've only heard a couple tracks from the new one, but I may be in the same boat. But yeah, the new stuff sounds awesome, the funkier disco style suits his stuff just fine. More of a live band feel...

You can listen to a stream of the whole thing on the Urban Outfitters site here.

So far, so good. Definitely more of a 70s vibe to this one I think, some nice arrangements.

This is what I think, I'm slowly getting more into it but so far the two tracks which were already out seem by far the best ones, which is a bit disappointing. Some sections are really screaming out for some production flourishes that he seems loath to use anymore.

Agreed.

After the euphoria of Causers Of This, Underneath The Pine is a strangely sombre affair. After hearing the two tracks I posted above, I was expecting this to be bursting with funk/disco, but a large proportion of the music is quite downbeat in tone. That's not to say that it's a terrible album, as there are some lovely flourishes on there, but I'd agree that a few tracks are crying out for some more sonic intervention. One of my favourite tracks is actually the opener; when I heard that I thought the whole album might follow in its example, but it wasn't to be. That said, it's probably one of my favourite album openers next to cLOUDEAED's Apt. A (1)

I don't think he's abandoned the sound he established on Causers and previous releases (he's still making remixes after all that utilise that sound), and it's nice to hear Chad moving in different directions, but I do hope future releases use more sampling/electronics, as that's where he shines.

So after listening to this album a number of times, I can safely say that I'm now totally digging it. I think it was just my initial expectations that clouded my appreciation for this, having loved the sound of Causers so much.

Yeah this was my reaction to it too. First listen was like "okay this is good but it's no causers." They're really quite different, but this is sooo gooooood.
