Cryptowen
Myself I've never noticed drum machines sounding particularly assy in that regard. Cryptowen
^Yeah, I find when the beat goes bawm tish bawm tish there's a certain lack of oomph. Good for ending a beat but not so much for sustaining one. Better to do bawm bawm tish bawm bawm tish Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide Cryptowen's signature Hide all signatures Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/64241-when-a-snare-and-a-bass-drum-play-at-the-same-time-in-a-sequence/#findComment-1528263 Share on other sites
Guest blacks
I don't know man, there's been plenty of four on the floor heavy electronic genres since I can remember, and they manage to get their snares in there on the twos and fours every so often without it sounding assy. Just got to blend your sounds together, try taking out some below 100hz on the snare, likewise clean up your kick around 180-240ish to get out of the way of the meat of the snare. EQ MY DAWG. Guest Blanket Fort Collapse
just like cooking a 5 star cuisine you gotta balance just the right seasoning on your ingredients to get them to blend together like magic. bass drums can blend with snares like gold if you EQ/compress/volumize the right choice of sounds. Cryptowen
I guess one could argue in music with live instruments (including drums), there's more emphasis on the tune itself. With electronic music there tends to be more attention given to the sound quality. So maybe a beat that would sound okayly EQed in some other type of music might not not sound okay in beaty electro music. wahrk
Don't ever let two percussion elements play at the same time! That's not how you do it! Reveal hidden contents Reveal hidden contents It is pretty cool to write drum sequences where two sounds are rarely triggered simultaneously though. modey
i used to hate four on the floor drum patterns too but i soon got over my elitism and actually started using them in my tracks. i kinda prefer straight drum patterns these days. On 3/6/2011 at 1:49 AM, THIS IS MICHAEL JACKSON said: do i have to make them better, or get better ones?? what is "better" when referring to snares? well, start using snares that sound good on their own as well as in combination with bassdrums! i dunno what other advice to give, depends on what kind of sound you're after. Zephyr_Nova
You could sample the kick and snare as played by a real drummer. Problem solved. Or any of the above suggestions. With regards to the snare losing its oomph when heard alone after rolling off some lower mids: you could set-up an alternate track without the notched out EQ for whenever that happens... though that's kind of silly and shouldn't be necessary. It would still work.
