simple ableton synth question

Recommended Posts

Guest Helper ET

hey so i cant be fucked to type this out properly or even explain it very well. yes, i know the ableton host synths operator and analog are 3rd party synths from another company. why though, when say, ive got a synth thing going on in operator, and i use the LFO to modulate the pitch, it goes up and down, but it only reaches its highest pitch every other time it goes up. so the LFO makes the pitch go weeeeeeooooooooowwwwwwweeeeeeeoooooooooowwwwwwwweeeeeeeooooo, but it goes up, then down, then when it goes up again, it doesnt go up as high, then falls agin, and comes right back up to the high point again.

know what i mean? is this a characteristic of operator or sometimes of all synths? because ive used loads of other software synths that dont do this

you may wish to check which waveshape your LFO is set to. for the results you appear to be after, you should probably use a triangle wave.

I'm starting to appreciate ET's threads more and more. He has a funny way of testing to see just how IDM everyone is.

What amazes me is that he doesn't make music, yet somehow generated a complex and plausible problem with production technology.

Wow, weird. He's right. When you set the LFO Amount to past 70% it starts to invert the bottom of the waveform and you get basically a double LFO with one part of the cycle much lower than the other. I've never used operator before, but I can definitely say this is abnormal behavior for any synth.

My advice, Just don't set the LFO to above 70% if you don't want that effect. 0-70% pretty much covers the entire usable range anyway. I would be surprised if this was a bug in such an old, well used synth. Better to treat it as a feature.

Strange I can't find any mention of this behavior in the manual of online anywhere. I would think that such an obviously odd behavior present in such a popular and widely used synth would have been discussed to death by now. Seriously, nobody else has noticed that when you turn the amount knob past 70% the LFO starts to fold back on itself? I find that hard to believe.

a google search for "ableton operator lfo 70%" provided this thread on the ableton forums.

first result on google, btw.

Your Google-Fu skils are obviously better than mine. I should have included "70%" in the search. Funny about that thread though, most of the people have no clue what the OP is talking about and it basically goes nowhere. Are people really that dimwitted about their gear? I mean, we're not talking about something complicated. When the LFO amount is set above 70% it folds back on itself in a very drastic and obvious way. If I ever used this synth I would have noticed it in five minutes, yet people that use it all of the time are so clueless. Really?

Or is Operator just not as popular as I think it is?
