PS3 flashing death light

Recommended Posts

Well today my PS3 decided to die on me. Which was nice. I know there's loads of shit on tinterweb about it but I was wondering if anyone had any first hand information of what the problem most likely is. The unit is pretty well ventilated away from obstacles etc.

Is it a case of motherboard failure or hard drive. I know my hard drive was pretty low on space. Happened while playing Killzone just after I had done the most recent software update.

If anyone's got any helpful tips that would be good.

is it the slim version or the original one? (not that I could help, just asking ... )

i bbeleive every original model ps3 is prettty much doomed to heat up and die out. (especially if playing newer games like killzone)

Hmmm... I remember Ryan Davis from GiantBomb.com talking about him having the exact same problem with his old PS3. It was in a podcast from 2010... I'll see if I can find it and if they came up with an answer for it.

Nice one. Cheers for the help. It's a few years old. Standard small hard drive because I haven't bothered getting a bigger one to whack in it. There is someone on ebay offering to swap a broken one for a new 120gb slimline for £120 which leads me to think that it's probably worth fixing the one I've got myself.

Edit:

This is exactly whats gwarnin:-

  • 2 weeks later...

It's quite possible that no-one gives a flying fuck but, I managed to fix my PS3 today with a heat gun and some thermal paste. Took about an hour so well worth it. Back to Killzone.

oh nice, success stories seem pretty common these days from those who actually attempt to repair it the right way. I'm glad to hear it worked for you as well. I've looked at the video's on how to do it and it doesn't look like fun.

Planned obsolescence is more prevalent now, I think.

i was extremely sad when my PS3 stopped working directly after the last firmware update. There was a class action lawsuit in Canada, but i couldnt join it since i am american.

Everything still worked except for the blueray drive

found out the only way to 'fix' this problem was to buy a new laser assembly, fuck that
