Need a hardware midi sequencer solution

So here's the problem: I have enough gear to constitute a small 100% hardware setup, but I have no way of sequencing it properly. I have four things I want to sequence via midi, and only one of them has a midi thru, so it's impossible for me to do a live jam using all of my hardware. Are there any sequencers which have at least two midi out jacks? I'm getting really sick of having to record all my parts individually and paste them together in a daw, as if I'm in the mixing process from the very start. It really kills the inspirational process for me.

MPCs have two jacks. The old ones do anyway.

What you really want is a midi splitter or patchbay tho. I had the same problem (too many boxes w/no thru) and it sorted that out fine.

id say you're better off getting some kind of midi thru box and that way you can look for a any type of sequencer.

midi solutions makes a simple thru box with 8 duplicated outs with only one in necessary. T88, i own one, does its job

if you want an old school analog step sequencer type hardware one i'd recommend the Frostwave fat controller sequencer

looks like a midi controller but actually is a bad ass, very portable dual CV /midi out sequencer, also has MIDI and din sync in in case you decide to do any voltage stuff in the future.

or if you want to go higher end/one device go the MPC or Monomachine route. I believe the monomachine can use it's thru out as a duplicate regular midi out (although don't quote me on that, someone told it to me havent tried it myself)

if you want to flick between several pre programmed sequences across several MIDI channels try the MPC with JJOSXL2 is hard to beat as a complete workstation

if you want to create sequences quickly on the fly with a good arpeggiator than the Monomachine is one of the best although it's only really six channel external MIDI

if you want to fuck about with notes in a more experimental way try the Tenori-on or G2 with a touch screen laptop

the Sequentix stuff is also good but very expensive

how much are those frostwave sequencers? can't find any price info.

Yup, and the secondhand prices for frostwave stuff have gone up considerably. You're looking at about £300 for their MS20 filter clone. Are you still thinking about the Dark Time?

yeah, I am certainly considering the dark time, but don't strictly need it seeing as i use numerology...just wondered about the price of the fat controller out of curiosity really...

Thanks a lot guys. After doing a little shopping, I suppose what I want to do now is wait til I can afford a good midi patchbay, and then buckle down and try and get the hang of my damn MMT-8.

I used to use an MMT-8 until December when my girlfriend got my an Atari 1040ST for Christmas. I use a MOTU Timepiece to distribute all of my MIDI and clock data to all of my synths, you can find pretty good deals on those on eBay. I think I got mine for something like $80 USD. It has 8 MIDI ins and outs, and you can assign all the way down to individual channels to certain outs, if that makes sense.

bcm if you use numerology, the forstwave will feel very natural to you. Numerology bases a lot of its sequencers off of the old school moog or modular setups and so does the frostwave. I bought mine for $375 used, It's one of the newer pieces of gear that was under appreciated during it's production run (like the yahama fs1r) and is relatively hard to find used, fortunately that doesnt mean its insanely expensive

fat controllers come up for sale quite a bit on analogue heaven, and i think the frostwave guy is a regular poster on there

that's good to hear, i check craigslist for them and it took a while for one to come up but i should probably go on the analogue heaven mailing list, or maybe not since i'll get gear lust

he was on the sdiy list too, before i stopped reading that....

and when i saw the squarepusher song "fat controller" i actually thought of the frostwave. didn't realize it was from fucking thomas the tank engine !

That's exactly why I unsubscribed about a year ago. Too many awesome things being talked about by actual owners, and then someones like "oh hey i'm selling mine, I'll give AH members a discount" blah blah. It's a constant state of "want".

knob based sequencers like this for me are a greek hell, need faders to really do good fast sequences on the fly. with a knob you can really only tweak 2 at once, with faders you can just throw your fucking hand on it and get a whole new sequence

i used to have a doepfermaq16 but sold it a while back because of this

I hear that. My intentions are to do all the pre-programming for sequences before hand, then simply navigate between sequences 'live'. I haven't yet decided if I want to cheat and use the Cirklon to control the tb-303...if only because I'd only need to change one sequencer instead of two in order to modulate.
