use force to scale, shove a few off note in here and there then resolve your track harmonically by transposing the whole sequence down untill it sounds finished

or just press all the black keys

for synthesis, read Rob Hordjik's Tutorial and implement his examples with the Nord Modular G2 demo software.

Every thing he discusses, while shown with the G2 demo, can be implemented in any synthesizer. Learn the concepts, and you can understand any implementation.

I'll get back to you on good theory resources...

tons of them on mediafire. if you do this search on google:

site:mediafire.com 'name of book here'

then you'll come up with some ... adobe files or whatever, pngs whatever of books. and you can read them.

or you can buy them.

there are some good books on synthesis but i never read them because i don't care. i'm in it for the jazz. i also didn't read the theory books much.

both synthesis and melodic/harmonic theory and whatnot could really add something later. it takes devotion though.

I've never found anything amazing. They're all cheesy, or not very well thought out. This one seems to be a good book on basic theory that focuses on making music on the computer:

Music Theory for Computer Musicians

This looks good also, for something free:

The Raven’s Spiral Guide to Music Theory

If you want something more general about the way that music interacts with the brain, I'd suggest this book... it's a good read:

This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession

The subject of music theory can be overwhelming, a lot of what you need to make good tracks is just a good set of ears. Knowing music theory can help you when you're stuck. Probably the best way to actually learn it is to take piano lessons. The way the piano is laid out is great for understanding how everything works. You also have to make sure, like any form of art, you don't get stuck on the technical aspects of making music.

I've read both of those and they are both great. This Is Your Brain On Music is incredible. I would recommend it to anyone with ears, and even to anyone without ears for that matter.

Who needs rules when you have ears ;D

Music theory is not a set of rules. It's a set of guidelines that has historically tended to produce pleasing musical results.

The only rules you should be concerned with are these ones.
