apparently an improvised tangerine dream, pretty impressive stuff. just one of those bands that is so much greater than the sum of its parts

also check out solo work from Edgar Froese, one of the main guys from Tangerine Dream

specifically 'Macula Transfer'

Take it chronologically from Phaedra, so Rubycon next for similar stuff, Ricochet for more heavily rhythmic sequences (amazing stuff on the second side)... after that they go a big prog WE'RE A ROCK BAND WITH GUITAR SOLOS for a while, but there's some decent stuff, and I really rate Tangram which is a very slight return to the Rubycon-ish sound. After that you've got some ok new age stuff, but avoid everything from the mid 80s onwards at all costs. A handful of decent tracks were thrown around in the late 90s and early 00s on those remix discs, but almost everything from Poland-era onwards is shockingly sickly new age pap.

The pre-Phaedra albums are pretty good, too, much more abstract. Zeit is essential drone/dark ambient.

Oh, and the Sorcerer, which was their only decent soundtrack in my opinion.

Great recommendations. I would also add the score for "The Keep" to that list.

Their score for Near Dark is worth mention. It isn't their best, but it is one of my favorite vampire movies, and it is just a bonus that they did the score for it.

Atem doesn't get enough rep, great album.

But yeah.. their later albums were much different from their older work in 70s. I think my two of my favorite songs by them were off of Phaedra and Stratosfear.

Stay away from Cyclone. Oh man does that ever have some bad stuff on it. Would hardly know it was the same band.

There is an '89/'91 nature soundtrack album called Canyon Dreams that is really good ambient. I'm sure not all of the 80's stuff is terrible.

maybe we should do a sticky 'electronic golden era' with the likes of Jarre, Kraftwerk, Vangelis, Schulze or anything else pre acid house I mean its not like any of these artist are going to produce anything groundbreaking anymore so a definitive guide of the forefathers would certainly educate the masses

and yeah i think a pinned thread is a great idea. it would be ideal if each member could encapsulate succinctly something like a 'top 10 electronic artist' list predating 1983 but not including any new wave like depeche mode (Even though i like their early stuff it wouldn't fit into the discussion) and in the same posting list your favorite album by each one of those artists with a little bit of explanation why. Since it was your idea Mr. soundwave i'll wait for you to start it

something like

1. Kraftwerk, favorite album: Computer World

2. Vangelis, favorite album: Bladerunner Soundtrack

and so on

and it would also be helpful to list a few electronic albums you love by artists you don't even like that much or who dont have a good track record. For instance 'Trans' by Neil Young (Who i can't stand but love this album) or George Harrison and Mick Jagger's synth releases.
