dunno about number of vsts but definitely hit 99% cpu use with a 3ghz core2duo a couple of times.

i once used 23 different vsts to make one kick drum sound

never more than like 15 simultaneously but I've definitely had songs with lots of little destructive edits that used compounded vsts. Probably about 35-40 if I could guess. Then again it's from the type of track where it would make sense, bar 15 is going to use an entirely new set of intruments and effects then bars 1-5 had.

I'm kind of disappointed that no one has mentioned RTAS by now. How cool does my music sound now?

It all depends on how much latency your dealing with with your buffer rate on your audio device. I could get away with <> 150 VSTs at 2048 buffer and <> 40 VSTs at 256 buffer without the CPU showing glitch artifacts trying to keep up.

like a glistening studio, full of neve heliwatt etc., rented out by a soul-less, boring alt-rock band.

Instead of just sequencing I'm trying to get used to performing most of my electronic stuff with midi controllers so I have to use the lowest buffer rate/latency possible so I can't get away with a lot a lot of processing going on real time.
