shenanigans. but i'm sure it's good, even if it's not TRULY NEW and REFRESHING

it's probably as TRULY NEW and REFRESHING as we're likely to get these days. which is probably not all that much. It does look to have some interesting filter and oscillator types. It's also quite interesting in so far as it creates it's effects from doing maths on the additive waves. I'm quite tempted to splash the cash on it but given the majority of ropey dubstep demos floating about Soundcloud etc there is a feeling that the "Razor" sound will become cliche in a matter of hours.

this video is probably the best wank-free explanation of what it's about:

so do any other Reaktor users find it an extremely frustrating situation that NI releases these amazing plugins (the mouth, finger, razor, etc) in reaktor player format, but they are to my knowledge completely uneditable in Reaktor itself. Why in the hell does NI tease us like this, im seriously mad!

Have you tried it ? You can totally use it in reaktor 5.5 and it's editable.I'm currently messing with it.

I'd heard that you can save the Reaktor Player files as normal Ensembles tho it's something I've not tried yet. I only have the MikroPrism freebie in that format but I've been meaning to play about with it to add a few more controls like a proper ADSR for a kick-off. I suspect when I do get Razor I'll just end up baffled by the maths.

i haven't tried it yet no, i just assumed it was like the other standalone ensembles they've been putting out, which are not editable

additive synths are pretty cool but really unintuitive to create sounds with at their core. Though they probably did a good job with it, can you load samples and have it mirror the sound additively? There was another one that does that.

No, you can edit their recent standalone ensembles. You open the RKLP file (or whatever the file format is) in the full version of Reaktor then you can save snaps, edit the structure and when you go to save you can then save as an ENS with your changes. You might need to have the standalone ensemble registered in the Service Centre but I'm pretty sure I've done this with the MikroPrism freebie they're giving away. If you want to try it out yourself, go get MikroPrism and give it a go - it's a pretty nice albeit feature limited physical modelling synth.

Yeah, that was Alchemy by Camel Audio that did that. I don't believe Razor will do that. I think one of the main ideas behind it is to take the unintuitive aspects and dress it up in an interface that will be very familiar to users of the more traditional substractive synths. So you are getting a good blend of both worlds. Not tried it yet so can't comment directly but probably will soon....

"and it EVEN has an OSCILLOSCOPE"

and

"in a WHOLE different WAY" x10

We shall see.

disagree. i tried using subtractive synths for a while but was un impressed with the sound capabilities. so then i tried fm stuff. i grabbed on almost immediately and can make stuff really quickly and intuitively.

you've just blown my mind

No problem, glad to help.

Anyway, so I've since bought Razor and have spent some time playing about with it. In some ways I really like it as it has a distinctive sound to it but in other ways the architecture feels very safe and perhaps slightly limiting. It could almost be quite a bi-polar synth in that when it's being put to more traditionally musical tasks it's sound will be very obvious but when used in a more experimental way then there could be some quite interesting tones and tonal shifts. Though, I do reckon it's only a question of time before the presets start popping up all over the place.

Overall, I'm pretty pleased with it and I'll probably get some good mileage out of it. I did have a brief look at the structure which is pretty overwhelming - it could be a good long time before I'm frankensteining stuff out of it for my own efforts.

I might be wrong but it doesn't seem to me that any self-respecting electronic musician would use presets.

I'm lovin the waterbed module by the way.

i'm sure there's a joke about dubstep producers in there just waiting to break out...
