getting left behind as the internet evolves

Recommended Posts

So, I have been feeling like I'm being left behind as the internet changes. I mostly use a 2005 powerbook g4 running safari 3.03. I currently am the only one using my home wireless network, and my dl speed is 0.33 mbps.

Now, I'm finding that many sites these days so heavily use complex formatting, and that a lot of things are simply unavailable to me and my computer. It is easy to simply go the university, use a nice new computer and use their 2 mbps internet. Fine.

I think that it would make sense for most new sites to take a tip from gmail or watmm and offer simple html versions of their websites.

discuss

also: there are some websites that exemplify their public utility. One such website is erowid.org. It hasn't changed much in many years, and I can rely on being able to browse the information there w/o any problems.

Technology will eclipse us all, just as my grandma could knit a jumper in half an hour and dismantle a chicken while watching countdown but could only drive down the centre of roads at 5 miles an hour, and just as my dad can explain how a clock works and what torque is but I have to set the video recorder for him, I will eventually be unable to purchase a packet of Fizz Wizz due to a disruption in my personal magnetic field blocking my credit unit from transferring funds and I will die of an electric shock trying to having a holo-wank

Best post I've read today. A tip of the cap to this man.

Sell these laptops after two years. If you keep them longer you can't sell them and when the heat conducting paste is gone they will overheat and your hardware will have a total fallout at the day the warranty is gone

It's only in Alaska that the internet is little more than a series of tubes. This may be your problem.

I think it's good to try and keep up because i'd wager that the old people in 20 years will probably be more out of touch than our grandparents are now. I'm sure there's probably quite a big divide in the way 15 year olds and 35 year olds use the internet.

I do that too, by sticking fortune cookies up my backside...

Since when as the internet been free?

If you live in Alaska and have internet of any kind/speed you should be grateful.

No excuse for that shitty laptop though. I'd have a killer desktop and overclock the shit out of it if I lived in Alaska. Its so cold there I could probley hit 1Ghz on my GPU and 5 on my Phenom II Quad.

Just saying.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. The internet is only going to be a (relatively) free medium for 20 more years tops.

how so?

Obviously the bandwidth and service aren't monetarily free, but for the most part you aren't censored in what you can view and/or contribute. It most likely won't stay that way for a whole lot longer.

I really really hate the whole mantra that websites have adopted now. Like flash backrounds and shit, just unnecessary shit that makes the page slow down.

I only have 1gb of ram on my netbook and sites like FACT mag and shit always freeze up.

My laptop is not that old, 2008 macbook pro running 10.5.

Recently I clicked yes to update my itunes, and then the nightmare ensued. This new itunes required a newer Safari (I don't even use Safari) which I downloaded, but that Safari was not supported on my current OS. I had to scour third party sites until I could finally find my old version of itunes and reinstall it.

I know, it's my fault for using itunes in the first place.
