Mixing/Mastering

Recommended Posts

I'd be remiss if I didn't remind folks that 'mastering' is not typically something you can/want to do yourself.

However, if you are asking how I try my darnedest to get the loudest, clearest mix possible, I like to use Waves SSL buss compressor and L3 multimaximizer on the stereo buss. If I'm feeling grungy, I'll skip the L3 and run the mix through Sound Toys Decapitator.

For electronic stuff I use Acid, sometimes Soundforge for processing samples and such, and T-Racks 3 for mastering <---I'm surprised more people don't use this. I can't imagine anything being much better for it. For all other music I use Cubase and T-Racks.

I often use that Vintage Warmer on vocals and guitars.

Actually the "professional mastering engineer" was a bit of a joke as I haven't had any of my stuff properly mastered yet but if I did I'd use somebody else and not try to do it myself.

What do you think of that SSL? I read about it and the lack of EQ seems proper rank...

Yeah I'd say a lot of people thought that the first time they saw it, but if SSL had put eight channels of their own EQ in it the thing would cost about four times more than it does now. As it is it's a great mixer, incredibly low noise floor, it sounds super clean. The stuff I mix together with it sounds better than if I mixed it together in Logic or on my old Mackie 1402. I've got some outboard EQ via a few channel strips so I put my synths through them first if I want to EQ things.

Bad points: It's expensive, and like you said it has no EQ. All the connections on the back are dsub connections so you have to buy dsub to whatever (XLR, jack etc) cables to plug things into it. it's probably overkill for most people on this forum including me but obviously I've more money than sense. It's only got two aux sends (but that's all my Mackie 1402 had too so I got used to it). The faders feel looser than most other mixers I've used. They don't move by themselves or anything, but it does feel different to other mixers.

DMX Krew's stuff sounds great and he's using an old 16 channel Mackie so it's not like any one of us needs something like this, but if you have the cash and want a piece of SSL it's a great start! They just announced an expander for it (called the X-Panda, ho ho) which gives it an extra 24 channels, I'll probably end up buying that too.

Do you track into your computer, play back out to sum and record back in?

What EQs are you using? Compression?

Have you considered the UAD 2 cards and plugs?

Mostly I just have everything going into the X-Desk and record the stereo output into Logic and that's my track (maybe chop things up a bit, different takes or whatever). Occasionally I'll record separate tracks in Logic and then sum them with the X-Desk but don't do that very often as it's not as much fun as just the single take into Logic, and the extra converting from analogue to digital to analogue to digital makes me feel it'll sound worse although it probably doesn't really.

EQs and compression:

Neve 8803 dual EQ

Neve 8801 channel strip

SSL X-Logix Superanalogue channel strip

API 2500 stereo compressor on the mix bus

The UAD stuff looks nice but I prefer to use computers as little as possible because I work on them all day in my job and prefer to not use the mouse and keyboard when making music (I've got it down to just clicking record in Logic now).

The API 2500 is my favorite vst. Tell me about the hardware....is it worth it?

Also, where can I hear your work?

I actually only got the API 2500 a month ago, so am still learning how to best use it. I really like it so far though.

I've got some demos of some things here:

(somebody else posted it up earlier) All made before I got the API 2500 however.

Another one not on soundcloud:
