Confield is 10 years old

Recommended Posts

Holy shit. I remember putting the CD into my stereo for the first time. I thought that this is what music would sound like in the future. It doesn't sound 10 years old! I raise my glass to you, Confield!

I always remember the first time I heard it...

I was in high school still at the time... My parents frequently drove from the small town we lived out to the city... a 90 minute drive. I used to love it, it was just quality music listening time for me. Plus the only store that sold albums by people like Autechre was in the city. So I bought Confield, and listened to it as we drove home as the sun was setting and tinting everything golden yellow. This was especially awesome in combination with Pen Expers. Holy crap the first time I heard that tune starting to burst through the seams on that wall of noise.... that was magical.

still sounds funky, fresh, and futuristic.

funny how so many people say it's a cold, wintery album. for me, it's summer as fuck! i guess that mostly stems from listening to it in summer while going on long walks in parks/bushy areas.

Each song has a different feel to me... I wouldn't say the overall quality is "wintery" or "summery"... for me it's just "otherworldly". Sim Gishel is like the point of view of an earthworm racing through dark soil and dodging fungus. There's no seasons underground. Parhelic Triangle is in... well... Hell... or Norfair hehehe

My first listening experience had a a similar aspect to it. I was waiting for the bus downtown, and the sun was peaking through the clouds right after the rainfall. So the pavement around me and the windows behind me were all reflecting shimmery gold as I listened to VI Scose Poise. It was quite an extraordinary experience actually. I've never seen the downtown area in quite the same light since.... it was just the perfect time/weather conditions to get that particular effect. That was perhaps my best opening-track-first-listen-experience.

For a while I thought Draft 7.30 was my favorite Ae album, but I recently went through most of their discography and was kind of awestruck with almost every track of Confield. Each one sounded like a "classic" to me. Part of that may be nostalgia, but think they really did strike upon something quite special with this album.

A friend at work was into shitty Aussie folk music and got angry whenever I played stuff I liked - she told me that if someone recorded a tap dripping and said it was cool then I'd be into it. I laughed, but then the first track from the new Autechre showed up on the Warp website ...

It's a craft pioneering around in deep space (VI Scose Poise & Cfern)

only to be sucked into a black hole speeding hecticly along (Pen Expers)

First contact with insectoid alien life form, it's worker drones creeping around inquisitively on the crafts exterior. The crew are somewhat excited but it's also making them feel uneasy and claustrophobic (Sim Gishel).

Worker drones inform higher ranking insectoids of the intruding craft and a huge eye in the hives centre is stirring and gazing into the craft whilst heavy squelching worms make their way towards the craft (Parhelic Triangle)

Infestation of the craft is happening, violent fast and unstoppable as the drones mill around inside the craft (Bine).

The crew are taken aboard a huge worm and stand inside a crystal room atop the worm as it snakes its way toward the centre of the hive and to the awaiting boss eye ( Eidetic Casein).

Crew sits at a large long table in the presence of Its majesty te boss eye. A sun is setting outside and the crew observes strange spores floating around on the strangely beautiful alien landscape (Uviol).

The crew are taken to a docking station where their ship has been taken. They watch on in awe as worker drones repair their ship, making it stronger and faster beyond belief (Lentic Catachresis)
