Hey you,

Anyone know what sub-genre of jazz is playing in the background of this video:

(Not quite sure why the music cuts out half way through)

And who are the 'head hunchos' to check out with such a genre ? I'd love to get some on lovely crackly vinyl

Reminds me of Chat Baker's music. So my guess is Cool Jazz. :sup:

Going by the extracts of each sub-genre on that site of the kind of music he made it sounds like it could be Hard Bop, Swing sounds a little more conventional/less free than the above example.

Here's another example of the kind of music I was going for -

So improv (ish) but never going too wild. Is there a good compilation album I can hunt for ?

actually I'd say it lies a little closer to swing. bop and hard bop tend to stray a bit further from the theme on the solos and just improvise over the chords. most of my knowledge of jazz is in the bop era and later, but I did recently get the album lester young with the oscar peterson trio, which is fantastic and in the style you're looking for.
