I randomly found this software on the net: http://www.mixedinkey.com/

it seems to be a tool that shows you the keys of songs in your playlist so you can sort them by harmonics before you DJ them. Anyone tried this yet? there seems to be no demo so I have no idea if or how good it works. Are there other tools that can do that too? maybe even freeware?

pointless unless you have a key hold setting on your kit

yeah right you need to use a locked key function on traktor or in live to make it work as the key changes with pitch no?

I can't imagine that software to be very accurate...

I have some kind of similar tool for my iphone that listens to songs and tells the key. I wonder how far it is possible to do that at all. (The iphone app seems to be really some kind of joke IMHO)

I quite like it actually, it's key and bpm detection seem pretty good for NONCRAZY things.

But yes, in order to take advantage you do need to pitch lock the stuff.

Works good for doing tech and housey type mixes...

so it works less when there is more noise in the track or when the track is focused more on beats? what about midi by the way. is there a tool that can tell me the key of a midi file?

i know that there was some focus for DJing but i would think this would be good for mixing down someone elses work if they don't give you all the proper info. Say you want to quickly add an LF tone or emphasize the formants that suggest the home the key or perhaps the relative minor for a certain section. I would think use it, then double check yourself and there might be some use in the product. it should be pretty accurate for simple stuff but i imagine it would probably just stick to basic major and minor and not go into modes or harmonic/melodic minor etc

edit: this was advertised on the same page...lol maybe im less hopeful for this junk and shouldn't be lazy http://www.platinumnotes.com/

"Near perfection", needs to look like a brick wall for full perfection

They did a test of it on DJTechTools a while back.. didn't come out very good on accuracy, so I never gave it a chance, but a lot of people says it's good. Can't find the article anymore though, but seems they have become friends with the makes of PlatinumNotes, so guess the've removed it. :P

back in my day we used "records" that were these round polymer discs. The DJ would work by "ear" to synchronize or "beat match" the 2 tracks. This required some level of "skill" on the part of the dj.

Rapid Evolution and Mixmeister Fusion both do it better. I know a lot of people dislike Mixmeister and consider it unprofessional, but it's really the best tool around for the sort of mixing I like to do.

Thanks for pointing that out. Does it work as advertised?

I don't think anyone here has any real respect for people who just use Virtual DJ or whatever the fuck to make the same kind of mixes people who mix vinyl do. Software is usually just used to make a different kind of mix, and it's a good thing, because it just creates more options. I could absolutely learn to DJ with turntables if I wanted, but that's not the kind of mixing I particularly like.

I'm not really familiar with how they advertize, but Fusion basically is just Sony Vegas/Acid, with shortcuts for detecting keys and tempo. a lot of the time you have to correct it as far as tempo goes, but that's easy to do, and it's usually very accurate with keys (or at least gets it so it works harmonically, even if it's not the exact key)

So you mix all your sets in key by ear?
