emulating old software.

i have no use for doing this but i was curious if anyone knows or does emulate old programs on their computer.

like, how about emulating old atari st software on a windows machine? would the midi in out work?

usually i use an emulator to emulate old programs on my computer.

why cubase though? wouldn't it be more reliable to use something native? it's not as though it has a certain 'sound' or anything..

i've heard of people using Dosbox to use old dos tracking programs like Adlib tracker (the program that uses the native build in FM synth chip in all pc 16-bit soundcards)

i can see the appeal of that. but when it's just midi sequencing without any sounds being generated, just seems kinda pointless?

some people have a fondness for a certain software package. for example, i miss Emagic Logic 2.5 for the Atari ST

i'll not argue against that, although i always thought that another of the big reasons that some folk still use an Atari ST is because the MIDI timing is really really tight (maybe even Autechre mentioned it in some interview at some point) but if you're hosting it through an emulator in a modern computer then surely the MIDI tightness would be limited by that of the host computer?

yeah the Ataris are known for their MIDI timing. and i agree that if you're running the software through an emulator to get that timing, you're grossly mistaken. however, if you just prefer working in that software environment with those fonts and all "making you feel at home", then that's totally cool

emulate with your hands or die
