Gagaku appreciation thread

Just been getting into this lately. I don't normally gush over world music but this really is wonderful- strange, eerie, meditative, sparse but not simplistic... just ticks every single box for me.

Anyone else like Gagaku?

Yeah I've heard the messiaen. I don't think it really works actually. Certainly loses a lot of the original charm when he thickens out the harmony to meet western 20th century standards... I feel.

to be honest i've never really gotten into any gagaku but i'm quite willing to have my mind changed, i'm a huge fan of traditional japanese music especially nagauta (kabuki theatre music) and noh threatre recordings. any specific albums you think i should get?

Yeah, I really like it, never knew what the genre name was until now. Post more of it!

one interesting about that specific bit of music in the youtbe is that it almost sounds to me like some sort of dessicated bagpipe music or something? something with the drones and the sliding up to the notes

Yeah I'm not sure what that instrument is, very striking sound. Also love the Sho, the thing providing the harmonic backdrop.
