AE Miniatures

Recommended Posts

So, before there was Quaristice, there were the miniatures.

Almost every album up until Quaristice had a track that was noticeably shorter than the others and came across as a little experimental sketch or microcosm of the LP or even just a crutch to keep the narrative flow.

Incunabula: Bronchus 2

Amber: Nine

Tri Repatae: Eutow

Chiastic Slide: Rettic AC

LP5: Melve + Caliper Remote

Confield: Bine

Draft 7.30: Tapr

Untilted: Iera

As the official release of Quaristice (omitting Versions & Quadrange) had no lengthy tracks (with the exception of Outh9X), when it was first released I saw it as a collection of these kinds of tracks. AE miniatures, a novelty/chocolate box.

This isn't a criticism, I enjoy Quaristice.

Discussion/abuse welcome...

Thank you Baph. To be abused by a member who's opinion you respect is a true honour.

I know that's Eye in your avatar but can't place where the photo is from.... inside a CD booklet I seem to remember, but was it a Boredoms release or Naked City???

Tiny, sculpted miniatures of Rob & Sean would be hilarious but you'd never catch me buying one.......

"Abused by a member" heheh, good one Beavis.

:flower: lawl.

I'm not sure where the Eye photo is from either-- it's not in any of the Boredoms releases I have on disc, anyway. Or is it? Maybe a super root? Hmm. It's pretty fucking iconic, though!

I guess I don't have anything productive to add here: although maybe I'd exchange Bronchus 2 with Kalpol Introl as the Incunabula mini of choice. And Bine is too intense to really fit your definition, imo.

I think some of AE's longer late-period tracks actually work as sort of restatements of the album proper: the structure and development of Surripere and Sublimit stand out in particular there.

the only one that seems to fit your description for me is rettic ac. nine has it's big bro yulquen, eutow/bine/tapr/iera aren't really that divergent from the rest of the tracks on their respective albums. and lp5 has 2, as you posted

Yeah, I was hoping for some debate about which tracks actually fit the bill as I'm constantly changing my mind about some of them.

Baph is completely right about Kalpol, had my blinkers on I think as I really, REALLY, like bronchus 2.

I didn't think Amber had one at all (don't listen to it very often tbh) but when I looked at track times Nine is a lot shorter than all the other tracks and when I listened to it I remembered it as being a kind of between-track-interlude (as is rettic ac).

Eutow is a stretch I'll give you that, but the others I stand by. They fit with the mood of the albums but still strike me as anomalous.

Would you call Autechre a band? Doesn't sound right calling them a duo... even though they are. You wouldn't say "I was listening to this duo called Autechre". Just doesn't work.

Fucked up, man.

It's problematic all right. Whenever I mention them to a non-geek I have to do a fussy little verbal dance that goes:

"this band I like. Well, they're not a band, two guys who make electronic music etc, etc.."

I've always entertained the idea of an artist called Martin The Black Rapper. The ironic thing being that he's white and a concert pianist.

Speaking of miniatures, have you heard the one about the miniature piano & 8" pianist??

i don't actually play that, but i stayed a weekend at the house of someone that did. he had hundreds of excruciatingly made/painted models, in a display case he'd also made. he even made one of gordon freeman from half-life. it blew me away, i was amazed. it was completely IDM.

remember how D&D has those extender books? do an IDM one. 4.2edition or whatever WOTC is up to now. or, an IDM d20 game.... multi-sided dice are IDM. edit: i guess a single-sided one would be IDM too
