Astrolabe Acid (5:25) Quote Dialing in from several light-years away comes a new Milieu album that is just as suited for Summertime as it is for space travel. H Is For Hologram is the summation of several dozens of influences, mixing together like paint and chemicals to create funky fumes that will get you higher than the moon. Combining a braindance infused hybrid of melodic analog synths, organic drumlines and high-grav bass frequencies to build a living breathing robot that will navigate your cruiser to Magrathea, park it in the corner of a Heighliner and serve you blue liquor in a swanky intergalactic lounge on the more colorful side of the Neutral Zone. Packed with loads of hidden samples, dialogue and sound effects from several of my favorite sci-fi movies and TV shows, this album is limited to 50 copies packaged in teleporter-paper and custom stamped cardstock inserts. Don't smegging leave Earth without it! You can stream the entire album here. Also, there is a companion EP of slightly more ambient techno tracks here: S Is For Sleep. I think any of the folks here who enjoyed that Phe_ album would probably really dig this too! The pew-pews (and most of the main drums) were made with my Korg ER-1, and the tiny drumbeat that starts the song was actually sampled from a kids "Animalband" keyboard. The "bubbly" lead is also from the Animalband. superstix
I have listened to H Is For Hologram in its entirety twice now at work and love it to pieces. "Pale Blue Beats" gives me the same kind of heart-swelling euphoria I get when listening to Orbital's In Sides (think Adnan's). That unresolved bittersweet melody cycling round and round to a mellow beat... just pulls me in. I could comment on each one of these tracks, but I'll keep it succinct. This album has a very classic IDM feel without being stuck in the old production techniques. I was kind of surprised to hear the title track start with a modern MPC beat scene-ish vibe, but then you bring in that Plaid-ish section next and meld the two... it's pretty smart, and refreshing, as is the rest of the album. Nice work and thanks for sharing. Fan. Nice work and thanks for sharing. Fan. Dawwwwww. Thank you! I'm really glad to hear it was that enjoyable! Pale Blue is one of my favorites for sure...otherwise I wouldn't have referenced Sagan with it. Funny you mention euphoria too as that song was originally composed/recorded for the Eufloria soundtrack, but left off because the rhythms were just too busy, despite its slow tempo. Honestly you'll probably be mad but I have never heard In Sides - gonna check it out tonight. I only have Middle Of Nowhere and I've always enjoyed it when I pull it out every few months. Also very happy to hear that the album doesn't get bogged down with older rehashings of what we all probably agree are "classic" sounds. I was going for like...Aphex "Cuckoo" style playfulness meets the tightness and booty-moving grooves of George Clinton, meets sexy swanky porno music played on a space shuttle screen. I'm definitely aware of the slight "wonky" flavor of the title track - and it's definitely a bit tongue-in-cheek too. That pad part that makes up the melody there? That's a straight up lifted sample from The B-52's "Summer Of Love"...they're one of my favorite bands of all time so I tend to sneak them in there whenever I can. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8r_gSiwEaM Thanks again for such awesome kindness!
