Guest abusivegeorge
A band first introduced to me by LUDD around 1999 or so. Loved them ever since, but mostly their 98-02 stuff. Anyway, I hope you enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnQ1ujBFl-I Edited June 18, 2011 by abusivegeorge Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/66908-mercury-rev/ Share on other sites
kaini
basically, check out anything that dave fridmann has produced lol. it all sorta sounds the same in a way, but it's all pretty good. i recommend starting here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGZsQf6WjHI also the flaming lips' 'yoshimi battles the pink robots', probably the biggest success he's produced... but yeah dave fridmann's production is sorta key on everything from deserter's songs onwards with MR. as well as a metric fuckton of other albums from the mid/late 90s. Guest abusivegeorge
I had no idea Dave Fridmann had anything to do with Mercury Rev to be honest, makes sense! I am aware of his work with the Flaming Lips and the Soft Bulletin is one of my favourite albums of all time. Liking the above tune :-) Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/66908-mercury-rev/#findComment-1603056 Share on other sites
beerwolf
Yerself is Steam is one of the greatest albums I have ever heard. A glorious, mangled, cinematic head-fuck of an album. The Soft Bulletin came a year after Deserter's Songs and I'd be stunned if the lush production turnaround of the Flaming Lips was unconnected. The gradual smoothing out of both bands' sounds match each other over the following two albums and then the return to a rawer sound in the last couple of years, Mercury Rev always coming a year before the Flaming Lips. Oh, and of course Jonathan Donahue was in the Flips on Priest Driven Ambulance and Hit to Death. For the first five records they were definitely one of my favourite bands, Mercury Rev, barely a note wrong. Guest abusivegeorge
OMG Hit To Death! Must go and listen to that now, I'd say that was Lips heaviest album, unless there's an album I'm missing. Not sure if I've ever managed "Hold Your Head" all the way through though. Caretstik
What's the one with the really lavish but brief orchestral intro (I think it's from the period when LUDD seems to have lost interest, never enjoyed anything else by them myself)? EDIT: It's 'The Dark Is Rising' (forgot I had Spotify). This thread also reminded me of the boobs on the cover of Boces (thanks yet again to LUDD for that). Never enjoyed Mercury Rev myself, but that sleeve evokes some proper nostalgia nonetheless. And btw George, we need to meet up in xxx's old Zep thread...
