I see a few of these on ebay for a decent price... Anyone have one? Any good? I like the tr style sequencer for drums, and the sampler...

good sequencer yes - can be very useful for sequencing and controlling outboard gear. on board sounds are ok, but it's just a glorified ROMpler really so not really much good for hardcore synthesis. still, it's useful source of classic roland juno, TR, TB, SH synth etc sounds. if i were to buy a roland groovebox however i'd go for an MC-505 - IMO the best of the lot.

dated machines with shitty workflow and bland alaising ROM's aimed at the late 90's dance/dj market before laptops were the norm. The RPS function was nice but only useful with internal sounds

for useful and intuative groovebox/sequencers try an mpc1000/2500 or monomachine

really? but it also has a sampler and apparently you can use the sampled waveforms as oscillator wave shapes. So rompler yes, but a very flexible one. Looks like the 505 really sticks you with the sounds it comes with.

if sampling's a big part of how you make music then you could do a better than an MC-909 for probably less - Electribe ESX for example. personally, I hardly ever sample or use samples so not a big deal for me. if I ever feel the need though i'll just use a software sampler...

the 505 has other features not found on the 909 that personally I find more attractive - a portamento control and better FX control/editability to name a couple. plus the build quality is better on the 505.

ya I'm not too big into sampling per-se, but it would allow for more drum sounds...

I just need to bite the bullet and get an mpc1000.... I keep searching for something comparable and cheaper. A mono machine would be awesome, but honestly I can't spare the extra 500 it would cost.

they don't really do many tracks though. I'm looking for something to sequence a few synths with. I'd love a sampling electribe though.

ya it's the older one, but it's got the newest pads + JJ. Just won it, so now the next challenge is explaining to my wife why it was worth the money :whistling:

It was a good deal though. $416 :) Over here it would be about double that. I'll have to get my parents to ship it over.

good stuff man

All you need now is a 256mb stick of 133 SODIMM RAM (you need 256 as the MPC only reads one side for 128mb. If you have JJOS then it should take up to 16gb CF cards so you don't really need the HD upgrade also the JJOS2XL will really open up options for a full blown MIDI workstation

I'd check the MPC forums for compatible RAM sticks as the Akai's own brand are a rip off and Hynix make them anyway.

Tell the Mrs it was cheaper than buying a Mac or something and that it will hold its value :whistling:

also to get you started

whoa dude thanks. :) Ya I'm pumped to get off the computer more often. Here's the details

  Quote
JJ Operating System 3.12

128MB Sample Ram Upgrade

1 GB Card with Samples

Classic Color Skin Set (Blue and red)

Black Pad upgrade These pads use the newest Akai MPC Version 2.11.

These pads use sensors like the traditional MPCs

so it looks like it's already pretty kitted out. :)
